For the first time in three decades, there's going to be a new sheriff in town -- Butler County, that is -- when two Butler Township men square off to fill the shoes of retiring Sheriff Denny Riccard.
In Allegheny County, residents in County Council Districts 1 and 4 will have to decide`whether to unseat incumbents or return veterans to the halls of Grant Street.
And there are many community-minded citizens hoping to fill slots on school boards and in municipal governments.
The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the general election.
After you vote, you can find Allegheny County results online Tuesday night at www.post-gazette.com and in print Wednesday in the Post-Gazette.
And we'll have Butler County vote totals and stories about key races next Thursday in North.
Allegheny Land Trust will dedicate the new 73-acre Irwin Run Conservation Area, adjacent to North Park, at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The land in Pine was acquired to provide a buffer for the park, which is Allegheny County's largest. The Irwin Run tract includes both steep wooded slopes and wetlands.
The ceremony will take place west of Babcock Boulevard, near the intersection of Jackson and Irwin Run roads. It will be followed by a noon picnic at the park's North Carolina Grove on North Ridge Drive. The picnic is sponsored by the trust, Friends of North Park and the North Area Environmental Council.
Details about both events are on the trust's Web site, www.alleghenylandtrust.org, or by calling 412-741-2750.
Haunted Attraction Magazine has named The ScareHouse in Etna one of top 25 haunted houses in the country, placing it in the company of such attractions as The 13th Gate in Baton Rouge, La.; Seven Floors of Hell in Cleveland; Shipwreck Halloween at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Calif; and Necropolis: City of Perpetual Darkness in Indianapolis.
A spokeswoman for the 14-year-old Cincinnati-based publication described The ScareHouse as "an innovative and elaborate haunted attraction with a very contemporary feel." It "incorporates current horror themes for an effect that's more like a great video game than a classic horror movie," she said.
The ScareHouse is at 118 Locust St. It may be too intense for those younger than 13. Admission is $17. For information, call 412-781-5885 or go to www.scarehouse.com. To see Haunted Attraction Magazine's complete list, go to www.hauntedattraction.com.
