Scott commissioners last night voted unanimously to shift the parking along busy Carothers Avenue in Glendale to the opposite side of the street as part of a tri-community street revitalization project aimed at spurring business development.
The change would relocate parking to the Glendale Volunteer Fire Department side of the street, which runs as a connector from Heidelberg into Carnegie. As part of the parking switch, Hall and Patchel ways will be made one-way.
Officials believe the parking shift would make the street safer for pedestrians and open the area for sidewalk enhancements, such as benches and planters.
Some residents objected to the proposed change, arguing it would create other problems without resulting in the desired impact. One thought a town meeting should be held on the issue before a decision is made.
The Carothers work would be Scott's part of a $2.4 million federal transportation grant. A transportation engineering firm will be hired to direct the traffic change work. The township also will apply for a $250,000 Allegheny County Economic Development, Community Infrastructure and Tourism Board grant to make sidewalk repairs on Carothers.
Heidelberg and Carnegie also have improvement plans for their portions of the streetscape project.
