Southmoreland wins first playoff game in shootout
Scotties earn first postseason victory, edge Fox Chapel HIGHLIGHTS

Southmoreland waited a long time for its first WPIAL girls' soccer playoff victory. Sitting through a shootout wasn't going to phase the Scotties.

Southmoreland is making its eighth postseason appearance but earned its first victory when Erika Wisniewski scored in the seventh round of a shootout to give Southmoreland a 2-1 Class AAA first-round win at Fox Chapel.

Aryn Askin tied it with 10 minutes to play in regulation for the Scotties (14-1-2), who won the shootout, 4-3. Jordan Gottlieb scored for the Foxes (14-3-1).

Other Class AAA girls' soccer

n Penn-Trafford 2, Gateway 0: Jessica Adams and Bethany Smyda scored in the second half as the host Warriors (15-3-1) overcame a slow start for a victory against the Gators (14-4-1).

Class AA girls' soccer

n Quaker Valley 1, Seton-LaSalle 0: Sophomore Eve Bowers scored early in the first half for the Quakers (10-6-2) in a mild upset at the Rebels (13-5).

n Beaver 6, South Fayette 1: Erin Hogan had three goals as the host Bobcats (15-1) beat the Lions (10-8-1).

n Mount Pleasant 2, Bishop Canevin 0: Alyssa Tlumack and Brittany Lazur scored for the host Vikings (15-4) against the Crusaders (9-8-1).

Class AAA boys' soccer

n Fox Chapel 4, Canon-McMillan 1: Kevin McKamish had two goals as the host Foxes (18-0-1) beat the Big Macs (9-8-1).

Class AA boys' soccer

n Chartiers Valley 2, Burrell 1 (OT): Joe Pacella scored five minutes into the first overtime to lead the Colts (11-5-2) to an upset win at the No. 5 Bucs (15-3-1).

n Mars 4, Indiana 0: The Little Indians (12-7) and No. 1 Planets (18-1) were scoreless at the half but Mars pulled away for the win.

n West Allegheny 4, Belle Vernon 1: The host Indians (17-1-1) trailed at the half but scored three times in a span of four minutes to beat the Leopards (11-6-2).

n Beaver 4, Montour 3 (SO): Josh Turnley had two goals as the host Bobcats (12-5) beat the Spartans (11-5-2), 5-4, in a shootout.

Class A boys' soccer

n Trinity Christian 2, Carlynton 1: The Falcons (12-7) pulled off an upset of the No. 4 Cougars (15-2-2) at West Allegheny. Tyler Cole's second goal was the winner with 8:46 to play.

n Freedom 2, Serra 0: The Bulldogs (14-2-1) scored in the game's first minute and in the last minute for a win against the Eagles (13-6) at Ambridge.

n Greensburg Central Catholic 6, St. Joseph 0: Ethan Shula had a hat trick for the Centurions (15-4) in a win against the Spartans (8-10-1) at Mount Pleasant.

n Sewickley Academy 2, Beaver County Christian 0: Mark Zindren had both goals as the Panthers (11-6-2) beat the Eagles (11-8) at Ambridge.

PIAA boys' golf championship

n West Allegheny sophomore Garrett Browning is tied for the lead after one round of the PIAA championship at Heritage Hills Golf Course in York. Browning and Palmerton's Mike Englert shot 2-under 69s. Belle Vernon's Bo Lustig (73), Latrobe's Ben Gjebre (73) and Hempfield's Chris Cline (74) are also among the top 12.

PIAA girls' golf championship

n Shady Side Academy sophomore Kendall Allen is the low-scoring player from the WPIAL or City League, shooting a 6-over 78, which was good for fourth place after one round at Heritage Hills.

Jackie Calamaro of Radnor leads the event after a 74.
