Frys leader cards 61 again

Troy Matteson had never shot a 61 until this week. Now he has done it twice in a row to set a PGA Tour record. His second consecutive 9-under round at the Frys.com Open yesterday in Scottsdale, Ariz., gave him a three-shot lead at 16-under 194 heading into the final round.

Matteson's 122 score in consecutive rounds broke the tour record of 123 set this year by Steve Stricker in the third and fourth rounds of the Bob Hope Classic. Webb Simpson (64), Tim Clark (65) and Chris Stroud (65) were tied at 13 under.

In an amazing stretch, Nicholas Thompson had a double eagle on the par-5 11th, followed by a hole in one on the par-3 13th. He finished with a 65 to reach 11 under.

More golf

Andy Bean shot a 5-under 67 for a share of the second-round lead with Russ Cochran in the Champions Tour's AT&T Championship in San Antonio. Cochran had a 68 to match Bean at 8-under 134. Jay Haas (67) was a stroke back, and Jeff Sluman (67) and Tom Kite (69) were 6 under. Two-time defending champion John Cook was 3 under after a 71.

• Sweden's Michael Jonzon shot a 6-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead in the Castello Masters Costa Azahar in Castellon, Spain. Jonzon had a 16-under 197 total. Sergio Garcia, the defending champion on his home course, had a 67 to join Germany's Martin Kaymer (68) at 15 under.

Tennis

Janko Tipsarevic will play Mikhail Youzhny and Francesca Schiavone will meet Olga Govortsova in the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, after all four players posted straight-set victories.

Sabine Lisicki of Germany came back to defeat Shahar Peer of Israel, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5), to advance to the Luxembourg Open final against Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland. Unseeded Bacsinszky upset fifth-seeded Yanina Wickmayer, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, in the early semifinal, ending Wickmayer's eight-match winning streak.

• Top-seeded Robin Soderling withdrew from the Stockholm Open semifinals because of an elbow injury, allowing Marcos Baghdatis to advance to the final against Olivier Rochus. Rochus outlasted Tomaz Bellucci of Brazil, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3, to reach the final.

• Grove City's women's team won its 23rd consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference title by claiming 8 of 9 flights and earn an NCAA Division II berth.

Baseball

Former major leaguer Terrmel Sledge drove in five runs, including a three-run homer, as the Nippon Ham Fighters defeated the Rakuten Eagles, 9-4, in Game 5 of the Pacific League championship series to advance to the Japan Series. Sledge, who played for Montreal, Washington and San Diego, hit 27 homers and had 88 RBIs for the Fighters this season. The Fighters will face the Yomiuri Giants in the Japan Series starting Oct. 31 at the Sapporo Dome.

Speed skating

Chad Hedrick got back at rival Shani Davis, setting a track record to win the 1,500 meters at the U.S. speed skating trials in Milwaukee. After losing to Davis by 0.02 seconds in the 5,000, Hedrick won the shorter event in 1:44.47 seconds. He beat Davis' record at the Pettit National Ice Center by 0.01. Davis took second in 1:44.50. Three-time Olympian Jennifer Rodriguez easily won the 1,500 in 1:58.45, more than 1 1/2 seconds ahead of runner-up Jilleanne Rookard.

Figure skating

Evgeni Plushenko of Russia won gold at the Rostelecom Cup in Moscow, finishing with a soaring free skate in his first international event since he was the Olympic champion at the 2006 Turin Games. Takahiko Kozuka of Japan took silver and Artem Borodulin of Russia earned bronze. American Johnny Weir had an error-filled program that dropped him to sixth in the free skate and fourth overall.

Boxing

Lauren Fisher, 20, of IUP, defeated Christine Cruz of New York to win the 119-pound women's division at the PAL Nationals in San Antonio. Sammy Vasquez, 22, of South Park, earned a bronze medal in the 165-pound men's flight.
