Roundup: Oliver's defense overwhelms Brashear
Bears force two turnovers in 21-7 City League win
Sunday, October 25, 2009

Brashear's two-year stretch of City League regular-season championships is all but over.

Oliver (6-1) limited the Bulls (6-2) to 117 yards total offense and minus-3 yards rushing in topping the two-time defending champions, 21-7, yesterday at Cupples Stadium.

Brashear will need help if it wants a share of the City League title. Oliver and Schenley (6-1) are tied for first place, and both would have to lose this week in conference play to give the Bulls a share of the title. Neither faces a team with a winning record in their regular-season finals.

Brashear plays a non-league game Thursday at Wheeling Central Catholic.

The Bears forced two Brashear turnovers while their offense secured the ball most of the game.

After a scoreless first quarter, Oliver scored on two big plays. Quarterback Tyrek Morgan and receiver Martise Smith connected on a 49-yard touchdown pass, giving Oliver a 6-0 lead. The Bears stretched their lead when Tyree Mathis scored on a 74-yard run.

The 12-0 deficit proved to be too much for Brashear.

The Bulls cut the lead to five when quarterback Henri Chatman found Manasseh Gardner on a 28-yard touchdown pass, but Brashear never got back into the end zone. Oliver added a touchdown and a safety in the fourth quarter.
