WPIAL Class A: Jefferson-Morgan reaches playoffs

With a playoff spot up for grabs, Brandon Kozich hooked up with Ryan Knight for a 17-yard touchdown pass and Taylor Barchiesi kicked the extra point to lift Jefferson-Morgan (6-2, 4-2) to a 21-20 win against host California (4-4, 3-3) in a back-and-forth Tri-County South game. It was the third touchdown of the game for Knight.

D.J. Martinak passed for 133 yards and two touchdowns for the Trojans in a losing effort. The Rockets have clinched a playoff spot while California remains alive.

Laurel 27, Western Beaver 6

Trailing, 6-0, in the second half, No. 2-ranked Laurel responded with 27 unanswered points to win and avoid an upset against visiting Western Beaver (2-6, 2-4).

Cody Montgomery and Jake Dando returned interceptions for touchdowns for the Spartans (7-1, 5-1), who have clinched a playoff spot after missing the postseason last year.

Clairton 59, Avella 0

No. 3-ranked Clairton (7-1, 6-0) blasted host Avella (2-6, 1-5). Kevin Weatherspoon caught a 52-yard touchdown pass from Desimon Green and returned an interception 50 yards for another touchdown.

Monaca 35, Neshannock 0

The Monaca defense shut out Big Seven opponent host Neshannock (2-6, 1-5). Joe Colangelo rushed for a 2-yard touchdown and returned a punt 73 yards for another touchdown for the playoff-bound Indians (5-3, 4-2).

Shenango 35, Union 0

Ricky Mathews scored the first three touchdowns as visiting Shenango (5-3, 3-3) shut out Big Seven foe Union (1-7, 0-6).

Springdale 48, Wilkinsburg 12

Six Dynamos scored touchdowns as Springdale (6-2, 4-2) overpowered visiting Wilkinsburg (0-8, 0-6). Springdale quarterback Brian Shemenski ran for a TD and threw for another.

Beth-Center 61, West Greene 0

The host Bulldogs (6-2, 5-1) beat winless West Greene (0-8, 0-6) in Tri-County South. Six Bulldogs scored, including Jake Sofran, who ran for three touchdowns.

Serra 25, Frazier 0

Rob Heatherington rushed for two touchdowns as the No. 5-ranked Eagles (7-1, 5-1) blanked visiting Frazier (3-5, 2-4) in the Black Hills.

North Catholic 41, Carlynton 13

Matt Fedzen returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown as No. 4-ranked North Catholic (6-2, 6-0) blew past host Carlynton (2-6, 2-4). Martin Long threw two touchdowns and Julian Durden rushed for two as the Trojans clinched at least a share of the Eastern Conference title.

Geibel 28, Mapletown 14

The Gators (3-5, 2-4) bounced back from an early, 8-0 deficit to beat defeat host Mapletown (1-7, 1-5). Christian Henckel and Hudnell Caldwell both rushed for 195 yards.

Avonworth 41, Riverview 8

Jimmy Zubik led Avonworth (7-1, 5-1) with touchdown runs of 37, 30 and 14 yards as the host Antelopes beat Riverview (3-5, 3-3).

Monessen 41, Carmichaels 7

Trae Cook scored three touchdowns to lead the visiting Greyhounds (6-2, 6-0) over Carmichaels (3-5, 3-3). Monessen has clinched at least a share of the Tri-County South title.

Fort Cherry 21, Burgettstown 19

Gary Kiefer scored TDs rushing, receiving and on a kickoff return as host Fort Cherry (6-2, 4-2) held on for a win against Burgettstown (3-5, 2-4).

Brentwood 35, Leechburg 0

Lamont Robinson ran for three touchdowns as the Spartans (4-4, 4-2) shut out host Leechburg (0-8, 0-6).

Char-Houston 21, Bentworth 0

Chartiers-Houston (5-3, 3-3) shut out host Bentworth (2-6, 1-5) in a Black Hills Conference game.
