For three quarters, it looked as if Seneca Valley's playoff hopes were wilting away last night.
But 12 minutes later, they were in full bloom.
A huge fourth-quarter comeback enabled visiting Seneca Valley to jump into sole possession of fourth place in the Northern Six Conference after a thrilling, 19-17 win against Pine-Richland.
The Raiders (4-4, 2-2) trailed, 17-0, after three quarters, but pulled out the miraculous comeback against the Rams (3-5, 1-3) behind the strong leg of kicker Will Hugo and the running ability of quarterback Donny Holl.
Hugo was the star, kicking a 43-yard field goal, and then provided the winner on a school-record 52-yard boot with 30 seconds remaining.
Holl started the fourth-quarter scoring with 1-yard run to cut the Pine-Richland lead to 19-7.
After Hugo kicked the first of his two field goals, Holl scored from two yards away to bring the Raiders within 17-16.
A few minutes later, Hugo provided the heroics.
Holl finished 11 of 30 for 146 yards for the Raiders, who outgained the Rams, 316-202.
Justin Williams rushed 23 times for 138 yards and a 90-yard touchdown run for Pine-Richland, which has lost four of its past five games.
Eleven players scored touchdowns to help No. 1 Gateway (8-0, 6-0) to an easy win against visiting Connellsville (0-8, 0-6) in the Foothills Conference. Brendon Felder returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for a score and the Gators added four other touchdowns from 50 yards or more, including Dayonne Nunley's 64-yard punt return and a trio of Rob Kalkstein scoring tosses. Kalkstein threw touchdowns on all four of his pass attempts. Next up for the Gators is a showdown at No. 2 McKeesport next Friday.
The second-ranked Tigers (7-1, 6-0) earned their fourth shutout of the season in a comfortable victory at Hempfield (2-6, 1-5) in the Foothills Conference. E'Vander Wright and Sam Gooden each scored twice for the Tigers, who coasted from a 49-0 halftime advantage. Wright scored on a 53-yard punt return and a 77-yard run. In his lone pass attempt, Ty-Meer Brown threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Richard Cleveland, and added a 5-yard scoring run.
In another blowout win by a ranked team, Syracuse recruit Dom Timbers opened the scoring with touchdown runs of 2 and 26 yards to vault No. 3 Woodland Hills (7-1, 4-0) to the win at Plum (2-6, 1-3) in the Big East Conference. Five other players scored for the Wolverines, who outgained the Mustangs, 351-83. The Wolverines got a 1-yard touchdown run from Lafayette Pitts and an 8-yard scoring hookup from John Yezovich to Mike Lee.
No. 4-ranked Bethel Park (7-1, 4-0) remained the frontrunner in the Great Southern Conference after defeating host Canon-McMillan (3-5, 1-3). The game was knotted, 17-17, in the second quarter, but a pair of touchdowns from Nick Kwiatkoski helped the Black Hawks run to the win. Kwiatkoski scored on a 3-yard pass from Matt Bliss, followed by a 2-yard touchdown run to put the Black Hawks in front, 31-17. Kwiatkowski also scored on a 90-yard kickoff return in the first quarter. Bre Ford added 140 yards and a touchdown. Division I recruits Chad Hagan (Ohio State) and Mike Hull (Penn State) each scored for the Big Macs. Hagan ran for a 74-yard touchdown and Hull on a 5-yard run.
Alex Papson ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries to lead the fifth-ranked Tigers (7-1, 4-0) to their fifth straight win, while handing host Butler (0-8, 0-4) its 13th loss in a row dating back to last season. Papson's scoring runs of 13 and 60 yards helped the Tigers open up a 37-0 halftime lead in the Northern Six Conference contest. The Tigers ran for 314 yards, while limiting the Golden Tornado to minus-11 total yards.
Damion Jones-Moore's third 200-yard rushing effort of the year enabled the Vikings (6-2, 3-1) to run past visiting Kiski Area (3-5, 1-3) in the Big East Conference. Jones-Moore rushed for 223 yards on 28 carries and scored on runs of 6 yards and 15 yards, giving him 16 touchdowns on the season. Kiski Area got an 11-yard touchdown pass from Matt Johnson to Tarique Godson to cut the Central Catholic lead to 14-7 in the third quarter, but Perry Hills found Vikings teammate Dom Maggio for a 68-yard touchdown later in the quarter to help the Vikings pull away. Hills finished 5 of 10 for 126 yards.
In a game that will be huge in determining the Foothills Conference's final playoff spot, coach Ray Reitz's Latrobe (4-4, 3-3) squad came-from-behind to nip host Norwin (4-4, 2-4). The Wildcats trailed, 21-10, at halftime, but hit for three second-half touchdowns to earn the win. Latrobe's Brad Burkley scored on a 10-yard touchdown run, his second of the third quarter, to bring the Wildcats within 28-24. Then, in the final quarter, Eric Shaffer threw the game-winning 35-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Lonigro. Burkley ran 21 times for 158 yards and three touchdowns, and teammate Scott Mohring ran for 134 yards on 12 carries. Tim Petro threw a touchdown and ran for two others for the Knights.
Greg Garmon's three touchdowns helped Erie McDowell (6-2, 4-2) roll to the victory against visiting Penn-Trafford (2-6, 2-4) in the Foothills Conference. The Trojans raced to a 35-10 second-quarter lead highlighted by Garmon's 95-yard kickoff return. Garmon added second-half scoring runs of 64 and 3 yards. Penn-Trafford's Manny Simpson ran 13 times for 101 yards and a touchdown, a 60-yard run in the first quarter. Warriors quarterback was 16 of 27 for 172 yards and a touchdown pass to Nick Markovic.
Luke Hagy and Luke Alberts both ran for more than 100 yards to help the Blue Devils (5-3, 3-1) climb into sole possession of second place in the Great Southern Conference with the win at Baldwin (2-6, 2-2). Hagy carried 31 times for 129 yards and touchdown runs of 29 and 9 yards, and Alberts had 14 carries for 101 yards and a 15-yard scoring run. For the Highlanders, Garrett Wild returned a kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown.
The Panthers (5-3, 2-2) ended a two-game losing streak by handing the visiting Indians (4-4, 0-4) their fourth straight loss in the Great Southern Conference tilt. The Panthers led, 10-7, in the second quarter, before scoring the game's final 21 points. Alex Park completed 11 of 19 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns for the Panthers, and added a rushing score. Austin Hancock was 13 of 22 for 164 yards and a touchdown for the Indians.
