The second doubles team of Lizzie Miller and Maddy Moersch won the deciding match in three sets as Sewickley Academy won its second consecutive WPIAL Class AA team tennis championship, 3-2, against rival Quaker Valley yesterday at North Allegheny.
The Panthers' Eva Sung won her match at second singles and teammates Aimee Fadden and Caroline Ross won at first doubles.
"It's so amazing, especially after winning it last year for the first time," Fadden said. "It feels good to be able to come back and show we can do it again."
Both teams qualified for the PIAA tournament, which begins Tuesday.
Greensburg Central Catholic also clinched a PIAA tournament berth with a 5-0 victory against Ellis School in the Class AA consolation match at North Allegheny.
Peters Township upset No. 1 seed and three-time defending champion Shady Side Academy, 3-2, at North Hills. Peters' second doubles team of Emily Madalena and Vida Comer trailed, 4-1, in the third set of their match with the team match tied, 2-2, but won the final five games to clinch the team victory. Peters Township also won at second singles (Caroline Nixon) and third singles (Laura Stroyne).
"Our girls just handled the pressure a little better," Peters coach Brandt Bowman said.
Peters will play Upper St. Clair in the final at 12:45 p.m. today at the Club 4 Life in Monroeville. The Panthers beat Pine-Richland, 4-1, at Keystone Oaks.
Chris Washington rushed four touchdowns as Penn Hills (4-4, 3-1 Big East) clinched a playoff spot with a 48-7 victory against visiting Fox Chapel. Penn Hills' Kei Pasch'l added five carries for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Montay Green had 11 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown -- all in the second half -- for the Foxes (3-5, 0-4), who were eliminated from playoff contention. They have scored 27 points in the past four games combined.
Rasheed McKamey had 24 carries for 203 yards and three touchdowns as Carrick snapped a three-game losing streak with a 42-6 win against Langley at Cupples Stadium. Robert Fields had three interceptions -- two in the end zone and another that was returned 43 yards for a touchdown -- and a 23-yard touchdown run and Ryan Roeper threw a touchdown pass for the Raiders (3-5, 3-4). The Mustangs (0-7, 0-7) have lost 10 in a row dating to last season.
