North Versailles

The commissioners in North Versailles voted unanimously to move ahead with a $101,047 loan, which will help the township pay for dramatic improvements on Route 30.

A massive project, paid largely through outside grants, will help the township purchase new traffic signals that have LED lights and operate far more efficiently than the current ones. The new traffic lights also will be synchronized and will have sensors to turn green when emergency vehicles need to move through.

• Commissioners last week approved a contract to jointly purchase road salt at $52.75 from Cargill with other communities in the South Hills Area Council of Governments Purchasing Alliance.

The commissioners had bid out their salt contract, which expired last year, but found the cheapest price with SHACOG.

Hempfield

State Sen. Kim Ward, R-Hempfield, will have her second public forum at 7 p.m. tonight at Fort Allen Volunteer Fire Company, Route 136, Hempfield. The event was postponed from last Friday morning. Her first Freedom Forum was in Unity two weeks ago.

Verona

Verona is taking bids for its old police car.

A white 2005 Ford Crown Victoria, the car will be sold for a minimum bid of $3,000, with the borough maintaining the right to refuse any bid.

Bids should be sent to the borough office.

• A pep rally, including a bonfire, will begin at 7 p.m. next Thursday in Verona in anticipation of Riverview High School's regular-season football finale.

The event will begin with a parade from Verner Elementary School down Center Avenue to the parklet next to the borough building on East Railroad Avenue.

• County Council member Nick Futules attended the Oct. 13 Verona Council meeting to update residents on proposed changes to the Port Authority Transit bus line, which serves Oakmont and Verona.

PAT is considering elimination of some runs, including weekend service and the gold bus, which travels to area shopping centers. He also provided the residents with information on what is going on in the county park system.
