Allegheny County has named its crime laboratory after forensic pathologist and former Allegheny County coroner Dr. Cyril H. Wecht.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office lab has been named the "Cyril H. Wecht Institute for Forensic Science" in honor of the man well-known for his work on deaths of famous people and high-profile cases.
Earlier this year, federal prosecutors dropped corruption charges against Dr. Wecht, 78, who had been accused of using his former county staff for personal gain. A criminal trial in the case had previously ended in a mistrial.
Dr. Wecht was county coroner before resigning in January 2006. He said the naming of the lab after him is "a great honor."
