There is much to talk about in today's headline game that sends the undefeated New York Giants against the undefeated New Orleans Saints in what is sure to be a raucous Superdome.
For Giants quarterback Eli Manning, the story is also personal. He's going home to play in New Orleans as a professional for the first time. And he does it on the field where his father, Archie, starred from 1971-82.
Archie's youngest son went to the Superdome almost every weekend the Saints were home.
Ask Easy Eli about some of his early heroes and the names roll off his tongue.
Quarterbacks Bobby Hebert and John Fourcade, the 'Dome Patrol' of linebackers Sam Mills, Pat Swilling, Vaughn Johnson and Rickey Jackson. Lots of great defenses.
And it was only 12 minutes from his home.
"New Orleans is a special place for me," Manning said. "It's where I grew up, was born and raised for the first 18 years of my life before I went off to college."
Still, "I don't think it will be any different for me emotionally. Once you get out there on the field and get your settings and surroundings, it's about going out there and playing good football. I don't think I'll be crying before the game."
After losing to the Dolphins Monday night for the most part because they could not stop the wildcat chapter in the Miami playbook, the New York Jets chose to disparage the package rather than tip their helmets to it. Coach Rex Ryan used the word gimmick. Linebacker Calvin Pace (like he should talk) said: "I can't respect that stuff, all that wildcat, because we're in the NFL, man."
Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown offered the best rebuttal: "If you don't want us to keep running it, stop it. Then we'll have to go to something else."
The Dolphins gained 110 yards with the formation. And for the record, since taking it out of the box last season, they have used the wildcat 120 times in 19 games and have gained 791 yards out of the formation (6.6 yards per play).
There will be history made at FedEx Field today. When the Redskins host the 0-5 Kansas City Chiefs, it will mark the team's sixth consecutive game against a winless team. According to STATS LLC, it's the first time in the history of the NFL that this has happened. On the flip side, it only puts even more light on how woeful the Redskins have been. Their record against all those teams without a W: 2-3.
One particularly disgruntled Bills fans is mad as, well, you-know-what and he didn't want to take it anymore. So, with the help of donations via the Internet -- where else? -- he purchased time on a digital billboard overlooking Interstate 190 in Buffalo. The display will be flashed 3,000 times a day. Its message: "It's time to clean house, Ralph," referring to owner Ralph Wilson. Next to that is a checklist of three names: coach Dick Jauron; chief college scout Tom Modrak; and vice president of pro personnel John Guy. The Bills are 1-4 and are coming off that horrendous 6-3 loss to Cleveland last Sunday.
Hank Poteat. Remember him. He was a third-round draft choice of the Steelers in 2000 out of Pitt, but never made it much beyond special teams before fading out of sight in 2002 and beginning a pinball existence in which he played pieces of six more seasons with three other teams. But he's still around. In fact, he will play in his 100th NFL game today. He'll be in the brown and orange on the visiting sideline at Heinz Field.
Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is able to play with two broken ribs thanks to painkillers shot directly into the fractures by an expert on precise injections the team brought in. ... In case you missed it, Junior Seau, 40, returned to the NFL this week, signing-- again -- with the New England Patriots. Too old? Not what he used to be? "Give me a helmet and let's build a player that I can be this year. That's all I ask," he told the Boston Globe. ... How bad is the Raiders' offense? This bad: They're the first team since at least 1960 to fail to get 200 yards in four straight games. ... Finally, there still are five undefeated teams going into Week 6. That's the most at this point in the season.
