If Baldwin's upset of Peters Township two weeks ago was a surprise, then what the Highlanders did last night was an absolute shocker.
Nathan Reed tossed a 65-yard touchdown to Garrett Wild in the fourth quarter to lift Baldwin to a 21-17 victory against visiting Upper St. Clair in the Great Southern Conference.
Reed, who completed 8 of 18 passes for 188 yards, was a factor in all three Baldwin touchdowns.
Trailing by seven points, Upper St. Clair (4-3, 1-2) burst to a 17-14 halftime lead after Alex Park ran for a 38-yard score and David Court kicked a 20-yard field goal.
The Highlanders (2-5, 2-1), though, provided the game's only second-half points.
Prior to their Week 5 victory against Peters Township, the Highlanders had lost 17 games in a row -- they had a winless record a season ago.
The No. 2-ranked Tigers (6-1, 5-0) continued to sizzle on the ground, running for 503 yards and eight touchdowns in a rout of the visiting Knights (4-3, 2-3) in the Foothills Conference. Darien Robinson and Ty-Meer Brown were among five McKeesport players to score touchdowns. Robinson ran for 245 yards on just six carries and scored on runs of 83 and 43 yards, while Brown dashed for 157 yards on four carries and found the end zone on runs of 65 and 60 yards. The Tigers did not attempt a pass.
Dom Timbers ran for a pair of touchdowns and the third-ranked Wolverines (6-1, 3-0) used another stellar defensive effort to roll to the comfortable victory against the visiting Foxes (3-4, 0-3) in the Big East Conference. Timbers scored on runs of 34 and 31 yards, giving him 13 touchdowns this season. Lafayette Pitts added a 94-yard punt return for a touchdown. The Wolverines' defense surrendered less than 100 yards for the second consecutive game and has allowed only 24 points in its past four games.
A monster effort by Bre Ford enabled No. 4 Bethel Park (6-1, 3-0) to blow past Peters Township (4-3, 0-3) in the Great Southern Conference. Ford ran for 220 yards on nine carries and scored on runs of 14, 70 and 68 yards. The Black Hawks, who rushed for 402 yards overall, also got a pair of scoring runs from Jared Pratt and one from Nick Kwiatkowski. Austin Hancock completed 13 of 21 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns for the Indians. Brandon Hoffman hauled in nine of those passes for 100 yards. After beginning the season 4-0, the Indians have lost three in a row.
Alex Papson ran for 213 yards and three touchdowns in helping No. 5 North Allegheny (6-1, 3-0) to the victory against the visiting Rams (3-4, 1-2) in the Northern Six Conference. After the Rams opened the scoring with an early touchdown, Papson scored on a 30-yard run and Grant Huckestein on an 11-yard pass from Justin Brozick to put the Tigers ahead for good. Papson's other two touchdowns came on runs of 12 and 5 yards in the third quarter.
Brandon Ifill set the tone with a 78-yard kickoff return touchdown to begin the game and the Indians (3-4, 2-3) rolled to the road victory at Kiski Area (3-4, 1-2) in the Big East Conference. The Indians outgained the Cavaliers, 340-32. Chris Washington ran for 170 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown, and Chaz Whittaker ran for a score and connected on a 37-yard scoring pass to Cullen Christian.
Damion Jones-Moore rushed for 144 yards on 22 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Vikings (5-2, 2-1) smashed host Plum (2-5, 1-2) in the Big East Conference. Jones-Moore, who has scored 13 touchdowns this season, scored on runs of 9, 20 and 16 yards in a first quarter that saw the Vikings take a 21-0 lead. He added a 26-yard scoring run in the third quarter. The Vikings outgained the Mustangs, 378-87.
The visiting Spartans (2-5, 1-4) doubled their victory total by handing the Falcons (0-7, 0-5) another lopsided Foothills Conference loss. R.J. Thomas and Nolan Bonham each scored a pair of touchdowns for the Spartans, who scored 28 of their points in the second half. Thomas ran for 100 yards on 11 carries. Hempfield quarterback Dante Nania connected on 11 of 14 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown. The Falcons have scored 26 points this season, the second-fewest in the WPIAL.
Eric Schaffer's 24-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Lonigro proved to be the difference in Latrobe's (3-4, 2-3) Foothills Conference victory against visiting Penn-Trafford (2-5, 2-3). The second-quarter hookup gave the Wildcats a 6-3 advantage, one they would extend when Brad Burkley ran for a 6-yard touchdown in the third quarter. The Wildcats won despite being outgained by the Warriors, 264-175.
A trio of touchdowns by Luke Hagy gave the Blue Devils (4-3, 2-1) the Great Southern Conference victory against the visiting Big Macs (3-4, 1-2). After Ohio State recruit Chad Hagan scored on a 3-yard run for the Big Macs in the first quarter to open the scoring, the Blue Devils battled back with three second-quarter touchdowns, including Hagy runs of 1 and 7 yards. He finished with 90 yards on 18 carries, while teammate Luke Alberts ran for 80 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. Hagan led the Big Macs with 77 yards on 16 carries.
The Indians (4-3, 2-1) tallied a season-high point total and kept host Butler (0-7, 0-3) winless in the Northern Six Conference. Indians quarterback Taylor Schmidt scored on runs of 19 and 65 yards, and completed 7 of 12 passes for 113 yards. Teammate Mike Hirt chipped in by returning a fumble 30 yards for a score.
Shaler (6-1, 2-1) rebounded from its first loss to down host Seneca Valley (3-4, 1-2) in the Northern Six Conference. Jesse DellaValle scored on an 8-yard run and a 63-yard punt return for the Titans, who outgained the Raiders, 324-108. DellaValle's punt return for a score came after Shaler had led, 13-7, at the half. Titans quarterback Tyler Bills finished 7 of 17 for 147 yards and tossed a 6-yard scoring strike to John Holtz.
