Butler teacher given probation for texts to students
Friday, October 16, 2009

A Cranberry woman who had taught English at Butler Area Senior High School has surrendered her teaching certificate and is on probation in connection with incidents involving inappropriate text messages to two students.

Christine Martin, 33, was sentenced by Butler County Judge Timothy McCune yesterday to two years probation. He also required the surrender of her certificate to teach.

She had been charged by Butler Township Police in May and was facing a series of felonies, including unlawful contact with a minor. But, she entered a plea agreement in September to two misdemeanor counts of corrupting the morals of a minor.

According to court documents, Ms. Martin had sent a 16-year-old boy texts of a sexual nature and a picture of a female exposing her breasts. Police said the boy reported the contacts and they were confirmed by phone records and witness accounts. She also had sent a 17-year-old girl an inappropriate text message, police said.
