Colin Dunlap: In the words of Musburger -- "You. Are. Looking. Live." at my 2 p.m. Tuesday chat, coming to you from lovely Hampton Township, Pennsylvania this afternoon. Looking out the window, it is dreary and dank. But, it seems perfect time for college football to finally, really get heated up. Off we go, to the questions ...
MtnEEEEEER: Colin - Does the Marshall game make any sense for WVU to play?
Colin Dunlap: It does to one man. Write him a letter ... send it to: Gov. Joe Manchin III Charleston, W.Va.
wvmule: True or False: WVU has the most talent on their roster than anyone else in the Big East.
Colin Dunlap: True....if you are talking solely offense, I would say them and Pitt.
WVUpetey: Could Lou Albano have played for the Mountaineers?
Colin Dunlap: Indeed. He played for Tennessee, right? Those rubberbands, though? I don't know. something tells me the officials (even the Big East ones) would have got the call right and made him take them off his face.
MtnEEEEEER: Is Noel Devine finally getting enough carries?
Colin Dunlap: This has become a hot button topic and I think something that needs to be clarified a little bit. No where, ever, do I remember anyone on the staff saying they needed to get Noel a certain amount of "carries." I do, however, remember them saying there is an ideal amount of "touches" they would like to get the tiny Floridian a game. That could mean rushes, passes or touches in the kicking game and, obviously a combination of all of those. And, the main thing in all of this is that Noel is fine with the amount of carries he's been getting. So, with that said, if he's happy, you should be too. It isn't like he's screaming and yelling to get him the (darn) ball like T.O.
WVUer21: Colin, do you see any intriguing position match-ups this week this week between WVU and Marshall?
Colin Dunlap: Yes....The WVU LBs against Darius Marshall. That will be the difference in whether this game goes how many feel it is "supposed to" or if the Herd surprises WVU.
wvmule: Question about the WVU o-line...how are they progressing? And is Josh Jenkins underachieving like the fan base seems to think he is?
Colin Dunlap: I have said it before and I will say it again: Josh Jenkins is coming along nicely, at a nice, fine pace. It is just that the hype around him was ridiculous coming out of high school, largely based on these arbitrary "star" ratings bestowed on youngsters by recruiting web sites. He is fine ... he has not overachieved, he has not underachieved ... Josh is right where he needs to be. But, guys who say "us" and "we" as they cover West Virginia put a label on him, on their "objective" web sites and made him out to be Orlando Pace before he stepped foot in Morgantown. It was unfair to Josh. He is fine and he will continue to get better.
WVUfaninCharlotte: Who do you feel is the best recruit "on board" for next year as far as playing a significant role in the offense first out of all the other recruits?
Colin Dunlap: You are probably not going to think this, but I saw the kid play when WVU went to Auburn ... I went to a high school game and watched Propst --- kid was a stud.
Ryan: Colin, have been around the team much this week? If so do you get any feeling that they are overlooking the Herd? Hope not.
Colin Dunlap: Have been down to Morgantown, yes. They are not overlooking Marshall. Stewart made a point -- almost drove it home too much -- that this team will not overlook "that team from down South" as he calls them.
goldnblueblood: One of the major issues coming into the season was the youth and inexperience of the offensive line. It seems like they've played well above expectations. How much of the offensive success rests on their shoulders and how much of it is the abundance of playmakers?
Colin Dunlap: Much rests on the line. Don Barclay, in my eyes, has been the biggest overachiever on the team this season. He is quietly having an All-Big East year and no one is talking about it.
wvmule: I just can't help feeling that WVU and Pitt are the heavy-weights in the Big East and that USF and UC are a dime short. Why isn't WVU or Pitt mentioned more in national coverage?
Colin Dunlap: Let's see what happens tonight with Cincinnati. To me, they are the best team in the conference right now (and, more important to them the best team in Ohio) and after tonight in Tampa, we will see if the national media has gotten it right. Right now, before a ball is kicked tonight, I think UC is the best team in the league with Pitt, WVU and USF all tied for second.
WVUer21: Colin, if WVU runs the table on this series (and I'm saying they will or won't), do you think both schools would seek an extension?
Colin Dunlap: Marshall seems to want to play WVU every year ... don't know if the same can be said the other way. If the Big East had another football school, you could probably say see-ya to this game.
Gold_BlueStew: The Big East needs another team. Who do you think would make a good football addition?
Colin Dunlap: Memphis would, but the league probably doesn't like the way their basketball program is a bit renegade. Navy might, but their basketball team would really, really struggle. UCF makes a lot of sense. ECU ... blah. Some people have mentioned them, but I am not sold on it. I will tell you what I would like to see. I'd like to see Villanova "pull a UConn" ... that is to say put a bunch of money into its football program like the Huskies did and elevate it really, really quickly. Well, for that to happen, they'd probably have to cut back on their basketball coach's clothing allowance (just kidding, Jay) ... seriously, I'd like to see Nova upgrade football and join the league full-go. And for a wild card: BC back to the league? Anyone? Anyone?
WVUfaninCharlotte: When will Scooter Berry be back on the field? If not, can he be eligible for a Medical Redshirt?
Colin Dunlap: he will be back. It looks to me like they are holding him out as long as they can, letting this shoulder heal up as much as possible until the games "really matter." The threshhold for the games "really mattering" would be the UConn game next week ... look for him to be back then, full bore.
trent: Give us a prediction for the WVU-Marshall game?
Colin Dunlap: WVU 38, Marshall 13. And, by the way, if you see Mountaineer play-by-play man Tony Caridi around, ask him about my prognostication skills. The last two weeks, I have missed the final score by a combined 5 points when Tony has asked me before games. I think he calls me "The Greek" or something of the sort.
Orlaco: Is this relatively soft early schedule good or bad for WVU? Typically fans (and writers) feel it gives more games to prepare for the tougher teams ... while forgetting that those tougher teams will often improve themselves.
Colin Dunlap: So a trip the the SEC, for a night game, was "soft"? Also, host a Big 12 school was "soft" Who do you want them to play ... Eastern Illinois and Coastal Carolina?
wvmule: There seems to be a lot of confusion on this ... would an 8-4 Notre Dame team trump a non-champ 10-2 WVU for the Gator Bowl?
Colin Dunlap: I am 90percent sure the answer is ND would have the first right of refusal on that one. DO NOT hold me to it, but it is my understand ND would go first.
wvmule: The Big East and the Mountain West should merge with the champ of each division playing for the BCS slot.
Colin Dunlap: And who is going to figure out those logistics for scheduling? Ponce DeLeon or Magellan?
Robert: Is Logan Heastie going to redshirt this year?
Colin Dunlap: Looks that way ... that is certainly the way I would play it at this point. To me, if you are one of those true freshman and haven't got in yet, the best thing to do would be take a redshirt.
MtnEEEEEER: Who are the people for WVU not getting enough credit?
Colin Dunlap: Barclay on offense ... Neild on defense.
wvmule: Last night Coach Stew spoke about Va Tech and Va not being willing to play WVU. Why do you think that is? Is it because the reputation of WVU's fans or they don't want to risk losing to a recruiting rival?
Colin Dunlap: Let's just say they don't act like saints in Lane Stadium, either. So, if Tech is using the whole, "WVU fans act poorly" line, well ... I think there are a number of factors. And, to be honest, it is best for both sides. I am a big proponent of none of the current Big East teams playing the defectors in anything ... ever.
Robert: Is Scooter Berry going to play at less than 100% the whole year?
Colin Dunlap: With a shoulder, I don't know if it will ever get 100 percent better...so, yes, looks that way.
WVUer21: Colin, Mel Kiper (insert your own opinion here) has placed Jarrett Brown number five on his top quarterback draft prospects. Do you feel that Brown is a legitimate threat to become an NFL quarterback if he continues to perform the way he has this season?
Colin Dunlap: Locker at UW is the best pro prospect, hands down. The Notre Dame kid is very good. After that, who knows? Brown, because of his mixture of size and ability to throw the deep ball, will get a look. I'd say he will get drafted, yes.
goldnblueblood: Wouldn't it be beneficial to drop Notre Dame altogether and add Memphis for all sports? It would boost the Big East basketball conference (if that's even possible) and give the Big East a reasonable 9 team to stop this uneven scheduling?
Colin Dunlap: Sure. As soon as Memphis quits vacating wins because of shenanigans.
Robert: Colin - That might make sense on principal but VaTech is WVU's second biggest rival. We need to play them if at all possible.
Colin Dunlap: On some levels, I agree. But, that said, it takes two to tango. Might want to pose the same question to Mr. Beamer and see if he "really" wants to play West Virginia.
Paul_Alexander_s_Man_Tan: The Gator Bowl will no longer invite a team from the Big East after this season, how on earth can they remain a legitimate conference when their second place team goes to the Meineke Car Care Bowl
Colin Dunlap: What you got against Charlotte?
goldnblueblood: Isn't it time to get Pat Miller on the field? Keith Tandy has been ok but that kid seems to have genuine lock down skills.
Colin Dunlap: Pat Miller has been playing more and more and more each game. With that 3-3-5 stack, there is a rotation with the DBs. Don't pay so much attention as to who the starters are, pay attention to how many snaps each guy gets.
Colin Dunlap: Folks, I have time for about 3 more ... the wife has me doing like 3264134632 chores today.
Robert: Have a question about the recruits coming in this weekend (or any time). Do they stand on the sidelines or are they up in the pressbox with a coach shadowing them?
Colin Dunlap: On the field. The press box is reserved for the working press. "Working" used loosely in a lot of cases.
MtnEEEEEER: What is up with Wes Lyons?
Colin Dunlap: You guess is as good as mine. He has been an enigma. I will say this: I am almost certain, no matter what he does in his time remaining at West Virginia, that an NFL team will take a shot on him.
Paul_Alexander_s_Man_Tan: Jake the snake the best pro prospect? No Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy?
Colin Dunlap: Those other two are great college QBs. Locker will be the best pro.
wv44Pete: If WVU runs the table, what do you see happening?
Colin Dunlap: A one-loss Big East team ain't playing for the national title -- if that's what you are asking. Simply not going to happen.
WVUer21: Colin, who do you like tonight? Cincy or S. Florida?
Colin Dunlap: Alright ... last one here. I like UC 28, USF 20. That's all I have time for folks. It has been a blast, an absolute blast. Be sure to head over to the blog and check out the photo of the t-shirt former WVU QB Rasheed Marshall posted ... it is a classic. See you guys next week. Same time, same space.
