High School Highlights: Big Macs prevail, 1-0
Canon-McMillan edges Upper St. Clair in girls' soccer

Taylor Schram scored midway through the first half and Canon-McMillan defeated Upper St. Clair for the second time this season, 1-0, in a WPIAL Class AAA Section 5 girls' soccer match last night.

The visiting Big Macs (12-5, 9-2) kept alive hope for a section title by beating the Panthers (9-5-1, 9-2), who are ranked No. 10 in WPIAL Class AAA by the Post-Gazette.

Other top girls' soccer games

• Megan Junker set a school record with her 53rd career shutout as Class AAA No. 4 Peters Township (14-1-2, 9-1-1) won, 3-0, in a Section 4 match at Oakland Catholic (8-8, 5-6).

• Sarah Stierer scored with 1:16 left in the second overtime, allowing Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (10-4, 7-4) to keep alive its playoff hopes with a 2-1 Class AA Section 2 win against visiting Quaker Valley (9-5-1, 7-3-1).

City League golf

• Stephen Lukac of Allderdice shot a 9-over 81 in the second round of the two-round City League individual championships at South Park Golf Course. Lukac made up a four-stroke deficit after the first round to beat teammate Evan Myer, 164-165. Allderdice's Mary Epondulan was the top girl with a two-day total 174. The top two boys and top girl qualified for the PIAA Western Region qualifier Oct. 21 at Tom's Run in Blairsville.

WPIAL golf team semifinals

• Central Catholic, Peters Township and Latrobe qualified from a WPIAL Division I boys' golf team semifinal by scoring a 391, 393 and 405, respectively, at Donegal Highlands Golf Course. Each school had a player shooting a 2-over 74 -- Ben Gjebre (Latrobe), Trent McPherson (Peters Township) and Corey Wagner (Central Catholic). Six teams in each division will participate in the WPIAL team finals Monday at Cedarbrook Golf Club in Belle Vernon.

• Penn-Trafford (394), Bethel Park (397) and Fox Chapel (402) advanced from the other Division I semifinal at Castle Hills Golf Course in New Castle. Bo Lustig of Belle Vernon shot a 2-over 74 for medalist honors, but the Leopards finished fourth.

• Sophomore Matt Walsh's 79 tied for medalist honors and led Bishop Canevin to its second WPIAL final in school history when it posted a score of 412 in a Division II semifinal at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Gibsonia. Neshannock (419) and California (421) also advanced.

• Led by senior Ian Bangor's 1-over 73, Sewickley Academy led the pack of three schools qualifying from a Division II semifinal at Indian Run Golf Course in Avella. The Panthers shot 404, South Fayette 410 and Seton-LaSalle 435.

City League girls' tennis

• Melanie Levine of Allderdice won the City League girls' tennis singles championship, 6-3, 6-2, over Schenley's Angelina Winbush at the Pittsburgh Indoor Tennis Club in East Liberty. She advances to the PIAA Class AAA tournament Nov. 6-7 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
