The Pittsburgh New Works Festival has announced the winners of the Donna Awards for its 19th season. The awards are named for the festival's founder, Donna Rae.
For the fourth consecutive year, Chris Gavaler of Virginia won the Donna for Outstanding Contribution by a Playwright. His "Vows" was produced by Rage of the Stage Players.
"The Blasphemy of Bees" by Christopher Dimond of Astoria, N.Y., was honored as Outstanding Production, with each cast member receiving an acting award: T.C. Brown for Outstanding Supporting Actor, Sara Fisher for Outstanding Actress in a Lead Role and Christopher Bondi for Best Actor in a Lead Role. Lance-eric skapura tied with Lora Oxenreiter of CCAC South for Outstanding Director. Oxenreiter directed "Working Together," written by Bondi.
Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role went to Arlene Merryman for her performance in "Senior Moment" by Californian Michael Wolfson.
Previous Lifetime Achievement Award winner Barbara Russell presented this year's award to Christopher Rawson, the Post-Gazette theater critic for 25 years.
The Pittsburgh New Works Festival encourages the development of new plays. The plays in the festival are produced by local theater companies.
