People have lived on the land that is Monroeville since about 1765. That's 244 years, or more, and a lot of history.
The life and times of the town will be celebrated Saturday at Monroeville Historical Society Heritage Day. It will run from 1 to 5 p.m. at the McGinley House and McCully Log House on McGinley Road, off Haymaker Road, near the Forbes Regional campus of West Penn Hospital.
The event is free and will include tours of the houses; bread-baking and butter-churning; and exhibitions of antique toys, women's fashions and household items. There will be games for children, who also can make a scarecrow ($4 fee) or paint a pumpkin ($1).
Monroeville was incorporated as a borough in 1951 and became a home rule municipality in 1974. It was known as Patton Township from 1849-1951.
The Ethel LeFrak Holocaust Education Conference will take place Oct. 25-27 at Seton Hill University, Greensburg. It will be hosted by SHU's National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education.
Dr. Michael Berenbaum, of American Jewish University, will be the keynote speaker at 8 p.m. Oct. 25 in Cecilian Hall.

Road Radio USA is "back on the air" in Western Pennsylvania.
In its fifth year, the Road Radio program is aimed at dissuading underage use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and engaging in destructive behaviors.
Jim Mothersbaugh, the founder and a victim of an alcohol-related crash, travels to schools and sets up simulated radio talk shows in auditoriums. He is the "host" and students pretend to be "callers" who ask questions.
Road Radio is appearing at 10 schools in Western Pennsylvania, through the local sponsorship of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and Edgar Snyder & Associates. Three of those schools are in the PG East region:
McKeesport Area High School, 8:15 and 9:30 a.m., Oct. 27.
Rostraver Middle School, 8:30 a.m., Nov. 16
Valley High School, 1 p.m., Nov. 17.
Thanksgiving is six weeks away, but students at Huston Middle School in the Burrell district are already thinking turkey.
The student council there has organized the Turkey Trot, a fundraiser to be held Nov. 3 at the high school track. All of the proceeds will be used to purchase gift certificates for groceries, which will be given to families in need who live in the district.
Middle school students will solicit sponsors, who will pledge a certain amount per lap walked or make a flat donation. It will begin around 3:20 p.m. and end around 5.
