A look at policing

For those who would like to learn what it's like to be a police officer -- beyond what is shown on TV cop shows -- the state and Pittsburgh Technical Institute are offering a 12-week Citizen's Police Academy.

In addition to describing the training, work and responsibilities of law enforcement authorities, the program strives to increase understanding and communication between residents and police officers.

It will be held Oct. 27 through Jan. 26 at Pittsburgh Technical Institute's Fayette Campus, 1111 McKee Road, Oakdale.

Participants must be Allegheny County residents, at least 18 years old and have no criminal history. Class is limited to 25.

Applications must be postmarked by tomorrow. For an application, go to www.pti.edu or call Trooper Robin Mungo at 412-294-1116.

A musical understanding

A free public concert of traditional South American folk music will be presented by Andes Manta at noon Monday in the Student Union Building auditorium at the Penn State Beaver campus, 100 University Drive, Monaca.

The musicians of Andes Manta are natives of the Ecuadorian Andes and believe that their music can foster understanding between the people of South America and North America.

For information, contact the Office of Student Affairs at 724-773-3951 or dxt24@psu.edu.

Comedy in Carnegie

You can have a laugh while helping a local organization at the Historical Society of Carnegie's Comedy Night at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Cefalo's Restaurant and Lounge, 428 Washington Ave. in Carnegie.

Cefalo's, which opened in 2005, is in the former First Presbyterian Church and re-creates the feel of 1940s-era clubs.

Seating is limited. Tickets are $15 each or $120 for a reserved table of eight. To buy tickets in advance, call 412-276-7447.

Healthy fair for seniors

A senior health fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at River Rocks Bingo Hall, 18 Furnace St. Extension in McKees Rocks.

Information about services and products that benefit senior citizens will be available, including information from local, state and federal agencies and answers about county property tax and homestead exemptions.

For more, call state Rep. Dan Deasy, D-Westwood, at 412-928-9514.
