A big happy birthday to Pittsburgh's Whole Foods Market, turning seven years old this week. (Where has the time gone?) Stop by the store Saturday for a free slice of cake while the supply lasts.
The birthday celebration culminates Thursday, Oct. 29, with the last event in the Autumn Dinner Series. Team leaders and chefs will plan and serve a five-course sit-down dinner -- complete with linens, china and chandeliers -- that will be held in a heated tent just outside the store. Wine sippers can BYOW; the nearby Sharp Edge is hosting a beer tasting and we hear there will be a champagne toast, too.
The menu rivals one you might find at a white-tablecloth restaurant, with recipes created by the local staff. Seafood Department chef Seth Morrison designed a Smoked Salmon and Pumpkin Bisque with Persimmon, Candied Pecans and Spiced Orange Cream. The entree -- Turkey Sausage and Butternut Squash Ravioli in Autumn Cream Sauce and Cranberries and Sage -- was created by chef Krystal Doring. Dessert, thanks to pastry chef Rhonda Sholock, a Dark Chocolate Almond Terrine with Pear Butter and Fresh Cream, sounds fabulous.
The dinner is business as usual for the community-minded market, the first of the 36 in the region to start a community garden.
Autumn Dinner, begins at 6:45 p.m. Oct. 29, BYOB, $40. For more information or a reservation, contact Kim at 412-441-7960, ext. 215.
