Jones' hat trick leads Pine-Richland to win
No. 9 Rams lock up at least a tie for Section 9 title

Brian Jones completed a hat trick by breaking a tie with 5:45 to play to lead Pine-Richland to a 3-2 win against Seneca Valley in a Class AAA Section 2 boys' soccer game last night.

The victory clinched at least a share of the section title for the host Rams (10-3-1, 7-1-1). Pine-Richland is ranked No. 9 in WPIAL Class AAA by the Post-Gazette and can claim the outright title with a win against Shaler tomorrow.

Seneca Valley (8-6-1, 5-3-1) will play Butler (6-7-2, 4-4-1) tomorrow with a playoff berth on the line. Butler's postseason hopes remained alive with a 3-2 overtime win at North Allegheny (5-10-1, 1-7-1). Nate Shook had the winning goal.

Also in boys' soccer

• Chris Paglia scored on a penalty kick with 20 minutes left in regulation to lift Class AAA No. 5 Bethel Park (13-2-1, 9-1) to a 1-0 Section 2 win against visiting Baldwin (8-6, 7-4).

• Voloolymyr Sagaydak had two goals as visiting Carlynton (12-1-2, 9-0-1) clinched at least a share of the Class A Section 4 title with a 3-0 win against Monessen (4-9-2, 2-7-2).

• Brett Woodson had two goals to lead Serra (10-5, 7-4) to a Class A Section 1 win against visiting Geibel (10-6, 6-6).

Soccer stars of the night

• Casey Courneen had two goals in Quaker Valley's 4-0 win against Beaver County Christian (8-7, 5-5) in Class A Section 5. The Quakers improved to 12-3, 9-1 in the section.

• Tim Wood had three goals in leading Class A No. 1 Greensburg Central Catholic (12-4, 12-0) to a 6-0, Section 1 win against visiting Winchester Thurston (7-6-1, 6-5-1).

City League golf

• Allderdice had the top six finishers and eight of the top 11 in winning the City League golf team championship at South Park Golf Course. The Dragons topped second-place Brashear, 427-481. Carrick was third at 499. Evan Myer won the individual title by shooting a 7-over 79 and Steve Lewis an 82. As the two lowest-scoring males, they qualified for the PIAA Western regional Oct. 21 at Tom's Run. Mary Epondulan shot an 84 to finish fourth overall, and, as the low-scoring female, she qualified for the girls' PIAA Western regional.

City League girls' tennis

• Lauren Rubin, Melanie Levine and Emily Wolfson of Allderdice and Schenley's Angela Winbush are the City League singles semifinalists. Each won at least two matches in the tournament at Schenley Park. The semifinals are set for 1 p.m. today at Schenley Park (weather permitting) with the final immediately afterward.
