Bridgeville Towers fire displaces more than 100 senior citizens
Tuesday, October 13, 2009

An elderly woman and a firefighter were sent to local hospitals last night after a fire in a senior living home temporarily displaced more than 100 residents.

The woman was taken by helicopter to West Penn Burn Center. Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Donald Brucker said only that she was "very elderly" and that her condition was "very serious." Her name was not released.

The firefighter was taken to St. Clair Hospital, Mr. Brucker said. His condition was not known last night.

Firefighters were called to the scene at the Bridgeville Towers on Bank Street at about 7 p.m., said Bridgeville Fire Chief Bill Chilleo. He said the fire began in the injured woman's unit, on the fourth floor of the 11-story building.

He said between 105 and 120 people were evacuated from the building. They were taken by bus to the Fairview Fire Hall in South Fayette.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation last night. Mr. Brucker said he wanted to speak to the injured woman before he declared a cause.

"For all intents and purposes, it seems to be accidental," he said.

Mr. Brucker did not know last night when residents would be able to return to the building. He said he first needed to be sure the fire alarm system, electricity and elevators were functional.
