Christian Brumbaugh

South Fayette

This past week: Brumbaugh was 15 of 20 for 209 yards and five touchdown passes in the Lions' 40-7 win against Northgate.

Check this out: The junior quarterback has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes (64 for 107), and has four times as many touchdowns (16) as interceptions (4). Brumbaugh is averaging 169 passing yards per game, leading an undefeated South Fayette team that is the Post-Gazette's third-ranked team in Class AA. The Lions are in first place in the Century Conference.

You are one of the few WPIAL quarterbacks to outduel Sto-Rox's Paul Jones. How does that make you feel? It was great, but it wasn't just me. It was our whole group of guys.

Who do you look up to on your team? I'd say all the seniors -- every one of them. They have a great attitude and a good work ethic.

What is your least favorite sport to watch on TV? Baseball. I used to play baseball, but I was never a big fan of it. I was pretty bored.

Who is your role model? My parents and my grandfather because of the things they taught me as a young kid. They made a big impact on my life.

In 10 years, where should people expect to find you? What would that be, after college? I don't know, probably just working an everyday job. Hopefully dealing somewhat with football, maybe coaching or something.

People would be surprised to know that ... I am a volunteer firefighter. I've been helping out up at the local fire hall for year and a half to two years. I just recently became one.

Kate Begor

Mt. Lebanon

Recently: Begor has led the Mt. Lebanon girls' volleyball team to an 11-0 record and the top spot in the WPIAL Class AAA rankings. The Blue Devils, who defeated No. 4 Upper St. Clair Monday, are ranked No. 1 in the state in the Pennsylvania State Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

Check this out: A 5-foot-10 senior setter, Begor is a four-year starter and two-time member of the PSVCA All-State team. She has committed to play for Duquesne University next year.

What does it mean to be considered the best team in the state? It's actually important. Our team is really young and, compared to a lot of teams, not very big physically. To be able to go out and dominate in the WPIAL and the state given our age and size is awesome.

Is there a player out there, maybe in college or on the national team, who you look up to or pattern your game after? No. This is going to sound bad, but my volleyball IQ is horrible. Plus, I've been playing for so long (fifth grade) that I kind of set my own standards.

Your mom, Dawn, is the Mt. Lebanon head coach. What's the worst part about that? Getting the dirty looks for talking back.

Something you can always find in your refrigerator? Pickles. I could eat a whole jar in one sitting.

Do you have a favorite teacher? My mom. She's my English teacher. If I say she's my favorite, it scores me some brownie points.

Will the Steelers repeat as Super Bowl champions? At their performance right now, it's questionable. But I think they'll be OK when Troy [Polamalu] comes back.
