North Side family overcome by fumes
Wednesday, October 07, 2009

Four members of a North Side family were hospitalized overnight after they were overcome by what was possibly carbon monoxide poisoning.

A father and a mother were taken to Allegheny General Hospital last night, where they were in serious condition but expected to survive, according to Sgt. Martin Devine of the Pittsburgh police.

Two children were taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Both were expected to recover fully, police said.

Emergency responders received the call about a possible carbon monoxide leak in the Pressley Street home at about 8:20 p.m. Police did not know last night whether high levels of carbon monoxide had been detected in the home.

Carbon monoxide is clear and odorless, but exposure to the gas can be deadly.

Utility workers from Equitable gas were called to the scene. No other residences were affected.
