Oakland Athletics pitcher Clay Mortensen rejoined the team yesterday after spending the night in jail after his arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Mortensen, acquired in the July trade that sent Matt Holliday to the St. Louis Cardinals, spent Saturday night in the Santa Clara County jail. He was released in time to be with Oakland for the season finale yesterday against the Los Angeles Angels.
"I just want to apologize to the A's, my family," Mortensen said. "Calling my dad this morning was probably the worst thing I've ever had to do in my life."
Mortensen (2-4, 7.81 ERA) made his major league debut with the A's in August.
Albert Pujols set the major league record for assists by a first baseman, getting his 185th of the year in the regular-season finale against Milwaukee. Pujols topped the record set by Boston's Bill Buckner in 1985, flipping to pitcher Joel Pineiro covering the bag on a groundout. He earlier eclipsed the National League record of 180 assists by Mark Grace of the Cubs in 1990.
Miguel Cabrera just wanted to concentrate on the final scheduled game of the season. A bruise and cut on his left cheek made that difficult.
"I'm focused on one thing -- the game," Cabrera said when asked about the facial injuries yesterday morning.
Cabrera then went 0 for 3 in Detroit's victory against the White Sox. Between playing Friday and Saturday nights against Chicago, Cabrera's face took the brunt of something.
"I have had a conversation with Miguel," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski wrote in an e-mail. "It is a personal situation and I am not at liberty to discuss it further."
New York set a team record with its 243rd home run. New York's previous record was set in 2004. The Yankees homered in 127 of 162 games this season and hit 136 at their new $1.5 billion park.
Kevin Kouzmanoff set an NL single-season record for third basemen with a .990 fielding percentage, committing three errors in 309 total chances. Kouzmanoff broke the record of .987 by Colorado's Vinny Castilla in 2004.
Right-hander Bronson Arroyo has decided against surgery on his right wrist for the carpal tunnel syndrome that has nagged him for years.
Chicago demoted hitting coach Von Joshua to Class AAA Iowa. Joshua had been promoted from Iowa June 14 when Gerald Perry was fired as hitting coach after 2 1/2 seasons.
Minnesota's Joe Mauer (.364) all but locked up his third American League batting title in four seasons, and Hanley Ramirez (.342) became the first Marlins player to win a National League batting crown. Ramirez became the first NL shortstop to win a batting title since Dick Groat for the Pirates in 1960.
