Mike Caputo rushed for 297 yards on 40 carries and scored twice to lead West Allegheny to a 28-21 victory against New Castle in a battle of ranked Parkway Conference teams. The Indians (4-1, 3-0) entered the game ranked No. 4 in Class AAA, while the Red Hurricanes (3-2, 1-2) were No. 5.
Caputo scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter and scored the deciding touchdown on a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Indians also scored on a 1-yard run by Jared Buck and a 4-yard run by C.J. Revtai.
New Castle's John Matarazzo scored on a 1-yard run and threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jajuan Jay. Matarazzo completed 12 of 22 passes for 148 yards.
West Allegheny accumulated 22 first downs and 346 yards of total offense, including 315 on the ground. New Castle had 15 first downs and 215 yards in total offense.
Sam Johnston completed 8 of 13 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns, as the top-ranked Jaguars (5-0) rolled to a non-conference road victory against the Mustangs (2-3). Johnston connected with Ed Hasis on a 7-yard scoring pass and with Jim Giansante from 28 yards. Ryan Ruffing scored on runs of 9 and 7 yards for Thomas Jefferson. The Jaguars also scored on returns, a 69-yard punt return by Mike Terpin and an 18-yard interception return by Nick Raimondi.
The No. 2 Vikings (5-0, 3-0) remained unbeaten with a road victory against the Cougars (2-3, 0-2) in the Parkway Conference. Hopewell was averaging 44.3 points per game coming into the game.
The No. 3 Colts (5-0, 3-0) are off to the best start in school history after their Big Seven Conference win against the visiting Hillers (1-4, 1-2). The Colts' Wayne Capers ran 1 yard for a score and connected with Beau Carson on a 73-yard scoring strike. Carson also scored on a 17-yard run. Capers completed 3 of 6 passes for 101 yards.
The Warriors (3-2, 1-2) scored 16 unanswered points in the second half to break a 14-14 tie in a Big Seven Conference game against the visiting Rams (2-3, 0-2). Greg Sotereanos scored on a pair of 1-yard runs for Elizabeth Forward, while teammate Brandon Hill scored on runs of 12 and 11 yards. Ringgold scored on a 63-yard run by Derrick Fiore and an 81-yard pass from Dylan Patch to Alfon Cook.
A missed extra point was the difference in this Big Seven Conference game, as the Titans (4-1, 2-1) post a road victory against the Leopards (2-3, 0-2). West Mifflin scored on a 45-yard punt return by Collin Killins and a 48-yard interception return by Imir Sanders. Belle Vernon's Matt Green rushed for 108 yards and scored on a 14-yard run. The Leopards also scored on a 10-yard pass from Brandon Dilmore to Mike Thayer.
Bill Young and Phil Powell each ran for two touchdowns to lead the host Talbots (3-2, 1-0) to a victory over the Little Indians (0-5, 0-1) in a Greater Allegheny Conference opener. Hampton's Andrew Bly led all rushers with 135 yards on 13 carries. Indiana's Kyle Edgar threw for 145 yards and a touchdown, while running 2 yards for another score.
Steve Liberatore completed 11 of 16 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns, as the Panthers (4-1, 1-0) posted a victory against the visiting Knights (0-5, 0-1) in a Greater Allegheny Conference opener. Liberatore threw touchdown passes to Kevin Ly, Ben Stephens and Jack Shogan. Josh Staniscia caught four passes for 161 yards for the Panthers.
Austin Miele rushed for 180 yards on only 14 carries and scored on runs of 11, 64, 5 and 41 yards, as the Planets (3-2, 1-0) pounded the host Golden Rams (0-5, 0-1) in a Greater Allegheny Conference opener. Randy Seebacker added touchdown runs of 2 and 9 yards for the Planets.
In a battle of winless teams, the Trojans (1-4, 1-2) posted their first victory with a shutout of the visiting Scotties (0-5, 0-2) in the Keystone Conference. Southmoreland has been outscored 258-36 by its opponents.
Nate Sphon ran 8 yards for one touchdown and connected with Vince Mongelluzo on a 5-yard scoring strike, as the Golden Lions (4-1, 2-0) shut out the visiting Red Raiders (3-2, 2-1) in the Keystone Conference. Greensburg Salem also scored on a 24-yard punt return by Mike Nowicki.
Grayling Sanders and Cody Peebles each ran for two touchdowns to lead the Colonials (2-3, 1-2) to a Keystone Conference win against the visiting Cougars (1-4, 1-2). Sanders rushed for 105 yards and intercepted two passes.
