CINCINNATI -- Pirates pitcher Jose Ascanio had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.
It was performed this morning by Dr. James Andrews, the noted orthopedist, at his office in Pensacola, Fla.
There is no timetable for his return, general manager Neal Huntington said.
Ascanio, who pitched only twice for the Pirates before being shut down, was one of the two pitchers the Pirates acquired July 30 from the Chicago Cubs -- along with Kevin Hart -- for pitchers John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny. Hart went 1-7 after joining the Pirates.
Ascanio has said several times he felt no discomfort in his shoulder until after the trade.
