The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission stocked Montour and Miller runs, Lower Hereford Manor and Raccoon Lake, Cascade Quarry and Neshannock, Slippery Rock and Pine creeks with trout yesterday. Lake Erie: Much-needed rain this week triggered the first preliminary steelhead "run" of the season, sending fish that had been holding in the lower sections of the tributaries farther up into the streams. Fish had spread out by yesterday, but new fish did not enter the lower reaches. Another inch of rain was forecast. A few 10- to 12-pound steelhead were reported. Poor Richard's Bait and Tackle called the steelheading "decent," but advised it was still early in the season and better runs are expected. The Fish and Boat Commission reopened the mouth of Walnut Creek to anglers yesterday, after using gravel to repair an undercut shoreline problem.
Allegheny River/Allegheny Reservoir (Warren County): Kirk Schwab of Harmony won the annual Tidioute Fishing Tournament Saturday and Sunday with four walleyes and six bass weighing close to 26 pounds. Joe Martinelli of Mt. Washington caught a muskie of nearly 22 pounds on the first day of the multispecies tournament. In all, 20 northern pike, 2 muskies, 70 walleyes, 222 bass, 35 trout and 1 catfish were weighed. The lunkers were a 3??-pound walleye, 3??-pound bass, a nearly 2-pound trout, and a 10??-pound northern pike.
Edinboro Lake (Erie County): Numbers of average-size largemouth and smallmouth bass were reported on this 245-acre lake in recent days.
Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Bad weather contributed to low fishing pressure on the reservoir earlier this week, although some anglers were targeting walleyes and hybrid striped bass in the Shenango River below Pymatuning Dam.
Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): A few largemouth bass were landed in deeper water from shore on rubber worm, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits, with black the most productive color. Crappies were suspended in 10 and 11 feet. Angling pressure remained low this week.
Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): Decent crappie fishing was reported in recent days.
Neshannock Creek (Mercer County): Neshannock Creek Fly Shop stocked rainbow and brown trout Sept. 26 to supplement yesterday's state stocking. Flow was good yesterday, with rain in the forecast for today. Terrestrials on top and Hare's Ear, Pheasant Tail and other basic nymphs were productive.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): Low fishing pressure prevailed again this week, although anglers were catching crappies, catfish and bass.
Allegheny River: Numbers of walleyes, mostly under 20 inches, and a few smallmouth bass were reported from boat and shore in good river conditions in recent days.
Ohio River: Daniel Mead of Baldwin caught a 30-pound, 46??-inch flathead catfish Sept. 1 near the West End Bridge. Tori Bregon caught a 43??-inch, 30-plus pound flathead on a nightcrawler and 8-pound test at 1:15 a.m. Sept. 28 in the back channel.
Youghiogheny Reservoir: Smallmouth bass up to 18 inches, with most around 12 inches, were reported in recent weeks in low water levels. Anglers also caught some nice rock bass and a 22-inch channel catfish.
Crooked Creek Lake (Armstrong County): Crappies were hitting in 20 to 25 feet in recent days. The bass bite also improved.
Penn's Creek (Union County): Good flow for this time of year was reported yesterday, along with a few Tan Caddis, Summer Blue Quills, Slate Drakes, Blue-Winged Olives and Tan Craneflies. Dry fly fishing was slow.
Spring Creek (Centre County): Low conditions were reported yesterday, along with a few Tan and Green Caddisflies, midges, tricos, Craneflies, and Summer Blue Quills.
