Colin Dunlap: If Brent Musberger were standing near me right now, and doing the open for this chat, he'd say, "You are looking live at the Morgantown Panera!" because that is where I'm doing this piece of Internet history from. Gamenight, tonight. Should be some buzz around here -- and in particular at the tailgates. (If you didn't get that joke, I'm not explaining it.) Anyhow, fire away, what you got?
Keyser_Couchburner: Have you heard about the efforts to revive the old "Let's Gooooooo...Mountaineeeeers" chant? There is a YouTube instructional video and a big push to bring it back tonight, complete with fist pumps. Reviews among fans seem to be mixed. Hopefully it won't make us look bad on national TV tonight if everyone can't get synched up for it. Your thoughts?
Colin Dunlap: I saw something on Tony Caridi's twitter account about it. I think "mixed" would be an apt way to put it. My thoughts are this -- they should have probably tried to revive something BEFORE the national TV cameras showed up, you know, have a dry run first.
WVMule: Did the wet turf down in Auburn hurt WVU's speed?
Colin Dunlap: No....when Auburn had the ball, the grass remained damp, too.
eerman: What makes Cody Hawkins so good?
Colin Dunlap: He's a guy who can get into a groove as a passer --- and when he does, look out. He's a guy who is, obviously with his dad being a coach, someone who is a tremendous student of the game. His negatives? He is short(er) and has to roll the pocket to be able to get clean looks. Everything said, they need to knock him down a few times to take him out of a comfort zone.
WVMule: Let?s talk o-line. Besides Barclay who has overachieved and underachieved?
Colin Dunlap: Is it just me, or did people expect bigger things, faster, from Josh Jenkins when he was coming out of high school? He is good, but the way the recruiting sites talked about him, he was going to turn into an Orlando Pace immediately upon touching down in Morgantown.
eerman: is Cincy the best team in the league?
Colin Dunlap: right now, undeniably...not even close.
eerman: A prediction on the game tonight?
Colin Dunlap: WVU 31, Colo. 17
WVMule: How is Tavon Austin progressing. My guess is we see more of him tonight? What's your take?
Colin Dunlap: Great question...I think the 12-day break served him better than anyone. It worked as almost a sort of an extra mini-camp for a guy like that. As a freshman, when he got here, things were such a whirlwind. He had so much learning to do and, I am certain, his head was spinning with exactly what his role was going to be. Now he knows he is a piece to this puzzle. That said, we will continue to keep seeing more and more of him.
Intrepid: Is Josh Jenkins over-rated?
Colin Dunlap: You said it, not me. The kid is good, very good. I just think he was built up soooooooooooooo much by some of the recruiting sites. Give it time and let's see what he becomes.
Intrepid: WVU 17 Colo 24
Colin Dunlap: In what? Skiing?
WVU6832: Will you talk to Erin Andrews tonight? If you do, tell her I said hello.
Colin Dunlap: Don't know her. I will tell her you said hello, though ... at least you know who she is. Unlike my co-worker Paul Zeise. Remember that one? I don't know if he was kidding or not when he said he didn't know who she was. Something tells me he was.
WVMule: A chat on game day is harsh..most of us are either heading to the game now or too drunk to type.
Colin Dunlap: Yes....but now I get Saturday off. Perhaps I will imbibe then.
eerman: What is the atmosphere like down there right now?
Colin Dunlap: I am at the Panera and there are bunch of bratty little kids running around, seriously. Shouldn't they be in school? Anyhow, as I was pulling up, it looked like there were a lot of RVs already over by the Coliseum ... should be a big-time atmosphere tonight.
Intrepid: Austin does not appear on TV to be that fast/ What's his 40 yd #?
Colin Dunlap: Huh? Maybe you missed that time he got behind the ECU defense. It looked like the ECU secondary was in quick sand.
WVMule: I keep waiting for Tyler Urban and Wil Johnson to have breakout games. With all of WVU's talent at the skill positions it seems like the TE spot is one WVU can consistently expect to have mismatches. Do we see more of the TE tonight?
Colin Dunlap: Urban will....he has been a little bit dinged up the past couple week. Stewart said as much, but I think Urban was a tiny bit more injured than everyone let on. Look for Tyler to continue to grow into his role in the offense.
eerman: Who will have a big game for WVU tonight?
Colin Dunlap: Noel Devine will gain more yards via the rush than Colorado's entire team will on the ground ... just a hunch. Look for the little guy to have a big game.
eerman: Great story on the walk-on who was in the Navy this morning. The guy is a true role model.
Colin Dunlap: Thanks, much appreciated. Your kind words should go to him, though. Whatever your political beliefs are, this much can be agreed up: Bryan Logsdon, like all of our troops, could use our thanks for what they have done for us.
WVMule: Just for laughs ... do you consider the HC job at WVU to be a prime job in NCAA football or are we delusional?
Colin Dunlap: It is a tremendous job, a very, very good job. There is tradition and a fan base -- and a full stadium every Saturday. It isn't Florida, but, believe me, WVU is a big-time job.
rock_wvu_79: I was at the game last yr. in Boulder and the consensus of most that poor coaching decisions cost WVU the game. I am of the belief that the coaching has really improved. Any thoughts on this observation?
Colin Dunlap: Bingo. As with anything in life, you learn from experience. I have said this time and again when people talk about Bill Stewart. The man is still learning how to be a head coach at a BCS-type school and, for my money, is doing a pretty fine job. Many schools would be lucky to have a Bill Stewart on their sideline. I would venture a guess the Colorado time management issues from last year are something that we won't see again; something that were learned from and corrected.
Intrepid: I agree 100% -- great story.
Colin Dunlap: what? Zeise not knowing who Erin Andrews is?
WVMule: Doesn't WVU seem more like an SEC team than a Big East team?
Colin Dunlap: Great observation...I have said this before. From its location (not in a big city, like the other Big East schools), to its on-campus stadium that is 60,000, to it gameday atmosphere, WVU is more like an SEC school than a Big East school in a lot of ways. But, that said, experiencing Auburn a few weeks ago, gameday atmospheres in the SEC are on a whole different level.
Chooch79: After the awful showing that WV had against Pitt with those Neon-gold unis, why were they not retired for good?
Colin Dunlap: The Yanks didn't retire their road jerseys after Maz hit his homer, did they? You are reading too much into superstition.
Chooch79: Where would you rank Major Harris among all-time WV QB's?
Colin Dunlap: No. 1, the guy was well before his time. He was, truly, one of the first "athletes playing quarterback" at the big-time college level. I think what separates him from pat white is that major had a cannon for an arm. and what separates major from bulger is that, obviously major could run a lot better. Mike White, my co-worker, covered WVU when major was in Morgantown and is close to him to this day ... Mike insists Major was magical in person. I was a bit too young to fully remember.
Colin Dunlap: OK...time for one more....must get over to the stadium area.
WVMule: Just for the sake of discussion lets say J. Brown continues to have trouble with turnovers. How much leeway does he have before Geno Smith gets the nod?
Colin Dunlap: A ton of leeway. Keep in mind, a pitch-and-catch is a two part process. There is the QB and the intended receiver. On at least two of Brown's interceptions at Auburn, the receiver ran a bad route, and I am told that, perhaps, it happened three times. Believe me, Geno Smith isn't uprooting Jarrett Brown anytime soon. But, that said, I am uprooting from this chair in Panera...on my way to the field. Thanks for all the mighty fine questions. Tonight's game is on ESPN, 7:30. See you guys.
