For the first time in more than four months, North Irwin has a police officer.
Borough council hired Michael G. Kresich as a part-time patrolman at a special meeting last night. Officer Kresich, of North Braddock, was hired in a 4-3 vote and will work 20 hours per week, according to Mayor Lenny Santimyer.
Chief Pete Henderson had been a one-person force until he resigned in May. North Irwin, a half-square-mile borough with about 800 residents, had been without a police officer since. The Pennsylvania State Police had patrolled the town in the interim.
North Irwin Council had attempted, but failed, to work out agreements for police protection with neighboring Irwin and Manor.
Officer Kresich is a part-time police officer in Fallowfield and a security officer at Carlow University. He is a former police chief in Braddock Hills.
