Temperatures after dawn started to rise on the heels of one of the coldest nights of the young fall season across the region that caused many furnaces to start and residents to worry about their gardens.
Clearing skies last night allowed radiational cooling and prompted the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh to issue a frost advisory for much of Western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia through 9 a.m. Residents were warned to take precautions to protect sensitive plants, which might be killed by frost.
Low temperature readings at regional locations overnight: Washington, Pa., 32 degrees; Johnstown, 36; Bradford, 37; and the Pittsburgh airport, 37. By 10 a.m., temperatures at the airport had rebounded to about 47 degrees.
Most of the region will experience sunshine and highs in the 60s today, with lows tonight reaching around the mid 40s.
