The WPIAL directed Apollo-Ridge High School to suspend football coach John Simon tomorrow night against Kittanning after he allegedly bumped an official in a contest two weeks ago.
Simon was ejected from a Sept. 18 game against Freeport because Simon and a member of his coaching staff twice violated the restricted coaches area on the sideline, receiving two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Two unsportsmanlike penalties means an automatic ejection. Under PIAA rules, any coach or player ejected from a game is automatically ineligible for the next game.
Simon did not coach Friday against Shady Side Academy. But after a hearing with Simon and game officials yesterday, the league directed Apollo-Ridge to add another game to the suspension for bumping an official after the ejection. The WPIAL also publicly censored Simon, put the Apollo-Ridge football team on probation the rest of the school year and directed the school to demand Simon attend a coaches education class.
Brianna Dombrosky and Amanda Meshanski scored to lead Class AA No. 8 Mount Pleasant (8-2, 6-1) to a 2-1 Section 6 win against No. 10 Greensburg Central Catholic (9-3-1, 5-2).
Kelsey Wilkins scored with seven minutes to play as Class AA No. 5 Center (7-2-1, 5-0-1) won a Section 2 contest, 1-0, at No. 7 Sewickley Academy (7-3, 4-2).
