Schatz in key race at Lernerville
Friday, September 25, 2009

Donny Schatz, the three-time World of Outlaw Sprint Car champion, doesn't get to Lernerville often in September, but he knows how important tomorrow's race at the Sarver oval is in his hunt for a fourth consecutive title.

"I always look forward to going East," Schatz said. "Lernerville this late in the year is something we rarely see.

"Typically we do well at these tracks and there aren't many races left."

Schatz has an 18-point lead over Jason Meyers, going into tonight's race at Eldora Speedway, which is owned by Schatz's car owner, Tony Stewart. Schatz knows what it will take to win another title beginning tonight.

"It's a close point battle, and it's ultimately about winning races. We need to win more races," he said.

Schatz's 12 wins pales by comparison with Joey Saldana's 18 victories on the season, but the number of top-five and top-10 finishes wins championships. Schatz holds that edge over Meyers and Saldana, who trails Schatz by 48 points in third spot.

"We're trying to keep going," Schatz said. "Guys are catching up every race and we've learned a lot, and we know what it took to win three [championships] and what it will take to win four."

Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps and time trials at 7:15 followed by heat races and the 30-lap feature worth $10,000 to the winner.

Hartman dominates

Bart Hartman of Zanesville, Ohio, pulled off the improbable by winning both UFo 51-lap features at Pittsburgh's Pa. Motor Speedway last weekend, collecting $30,000 for his efforts.

The hottest driver in Super Late Model racing, Hartman picked up $42,000 Sept. 12 at Eldora Speedway's World 100 before heading to Pittsburgh.

First order of business for Hartman was winning the 21st annual Pittsburgher from the eighth starting position.

With the start of The Ultimate 15 determined by the finishing order of the Pittsburgher, Hartman came from 20th to pick up the second $10,000 first-place prize to earn the $10,000 bonus for winning both events.

Alex Ferree of Saxonburg earned his second UFo Race Championship point title.
