The Fumbler: Reaching for the summit
Friday, September 25, 2009

Someone doubted The Fumbler's awareness of current events when

he was asked this week if he knew what the G-20 was?

"What kind of dolt do you think I am?" The Fumbler said. "That was the last number I needed for bingo at the Our Lady of Grace church festival last month."

Then he was asked if he would participate in protests.

"Well, I did stand outside the WPIAL offices in Green Tree last year to protest Upper St. Clair's No. 14 seed for the Quad-A playoffs," he said.

Enough of the current events stuff. The only current event that The Fumbler cares about is his record. He was an incredible 58-6 last week, a .906 percentage. That lifted his season mark to .815. He's usually never better than .800 at this time of the year.

Here are his thoughts on this weekend's top games:

New Castle (3-0 overall, 1-0 in conference) at Hopewell (3-0, 1-0), 7 p.m. today -- The Fumbler will attend this game and have his pregame meal at one of his favorite chicken wing joints -- Harold's Inn in Hopewell. Then he'll head to the game and look for plenty of offense from these two high-powered teams. Hopewell's defense, though, will be the difference. Winner: Hopewell.

Bethel Park (3-0, 0-0) at Woodland Hills (2-1, 0-0), 7 p.m. today -- It seems many people forgot about Woodland Hills after it lost the season opener to a good Steubenville team. But the Wolverines are still one of the best Class AAAA teams. Are they good enough to end Bethel Park's 16-game WPIAL winning streak? Winner: Bethel Park.

Chartiers Valley (3-0, 1-0) at West Mifflin (3-0, 1-0), 7 p.m. today -- Tim Brennan has West Mifflin off to its best start in his three years as coach. But Chartiers Valley is one of the best teams in WPIAL Class AAA. Winner: Chartiers Valley.

South Fayette (3-0, 3-0) at Sto-Rox (3-0, 3-0) -- Paul Jones played his first game at quarterback last week for Sto-Rox after missing the first two games because of a broken ankle. But the key to this game could be how well South Fayette QB Christian Brumbaugh plays. Winner: Sto-Rox.

Fort Cherry (3-0, 1-0) at Serra (3-0, 1-0), today at 7:30 -- Fort Cherry has allowed only 24 points in three games, while Serra has one of Class A's top scoring offenses (35.7 points a game). Offense will win out in this Black Hills Conference showdown. Winner: Serra.
