Varsity Notes: Debuting Western Pennsylvania U.
Friday, September 25, 2009

You can't expect Pitt or Penn State to land every top high school football player in the WPIAL and City League -- it never happened before and likely never will.

But what if one college landed every top WPIAL and City player from the past five years? What kind of team would it have?

This area certainly doesn't produce nearly as many Division I college players as it did 40 or 50 years ago, but if you took all of the best WPIAL and City League players currently playing in college and put together a starting lineup, the team would look fairly good.

We're going to call the squad WPU -- for Western Pennsylvania University. And some players on this team are injured for their college squads, but they'll play hurt for us.

So, what do you think of the starting lineup for WPU?

On offense:

Quarterback -- Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State (Jeannette).

Receivers -- Jonathan Baldwin, Pitt (Aliquippa) and Derek Moye, Penn State (Rochester). They would make for one of the tallest receiver tandems in the country. And throw in 6-7 Wes Lyons, West Virginia (Woodland Hills) as a backup to add more size.

Halfback -- Not much to pick from at this position because the WPIAL doesn't produce many Division I running backs. But we'll go with Eugene Jarvis, Akron (Central Catholic) and Jordan Hall, Ohio State (Jeannette) as his backup. Hall looked good in his first taste of action last week.

H-back -- Our offense uses an H-back because Christian Wilson (Montour) starts at the position for the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Tight end -- Rob Gronkowski, Arizona (Woodland Hills). One of the best in the country.

Offensive line --Stefen Wisniewski, Penn State (Central Catholic) is easily the center. Elsewhere, Jason Pinkston, Pitt (Baldwin), John Malecki, Pitt (Franklin Regional), Lucas Nix, Pitt (Thomas Jefferson), Andrew Miller, Ohio State (Trinity) and Don Barclay, West Virginia (Seneca Valley) all start for their teams.

Kicker -- Ryan Lichtenstein, Syracuse (Gateway). A freshman walk-on, Lichtenstein made a game-winning field goal to beat Northwestern last week.

And now for the defense.

Defensive line -- WPU will play a 3-4 because our linebackers are strong. On the line, pick from Mick Williams, Pitt (Monessen), Kaleb Ramsey, Boston College (Laurel Highlands), Myles Caragein, Pitt (Keystone Oaks) and Quentin Williams, Northwestern (Central Catholic).

Linebackers -- A strong group, led by Penn State's Sean Lee (Upper St. Clair). The other starters will be Nate Williams, Northwestern (Central Catholic) and Dan Mason, Pitt (Penn Hills).

Defensive backs -- A number to pick from, but starters will be Barry Church, Toledo (Penn Hills), Darrin Walls, Notre Dame (Woodland Hills), Nick Sukay, Penn State (Greensburg Central Catholic) and either Brad Phillips, Northwestern (Franklin Regional) or Dom DeCicco, Pitt (Thomas Jefferson). Church has been an All-Mid-American Conference selection three years in a row.

Punter -- Coaches at WPU are working on developing one.

Overall, the team has some star power, with a few potential All-Americans in Gronkowski and Lee. Pryor and a couple others also have some star power. It's a little weak in one or two areas, but overall, would this be a top 25 team?

Ricketts out with injury

North Allegheny offensive lineman Tom Ricketts, a Penn State recruit, will not play the next few games because of a sprained knee. Ricketts hasn't played since the first game of the season.

"I did the same thing Troy Polamalu did," Ricketts said. "Realistically, I'll be back for the Pine-Richland game [Oct. 16]. Or maybe Shaler the week before. I'm not sure."

Check this out

• Burrell is the No. 1 scoring offense in the WPIAL, averaging 49.3 points a game. Jeannette (47.7) is second and Hopewell (47.3) third.

• Greensburg Central Catholic has allowed the fewest points (13). Gateway and Rochester have allowed only 14.

• Since joining the WPIAL in 2004, West Shamokin has a 6-45 record. This season has been particularly rough as West Shamokin has been outscored, 154-0, in three games.

Soccer coach gets 400

Hampton girls' soccer coach Frank Christy reached a milestone Monday when he won his 400th career game. Christy, 57, has been at Hampton for 20 seasons and also coached two years at Linsly School in Wheeling, W. Va., and five at Fox Chapel. His record is 400-95-28.

"It just shows if you hang around long enough, the 400 will show up," Christy said with a laugh. "I guess it's a big deal because I think I'm No. 1 in the state for girls. I don't know of any girls' coach who has lasted this long. It's kind of tough to last that long nowadays with things like parental interference."

Baseball commitments

A few more WPIAL baseball players have made verbal commitments to Division I colleges. Penn-Trafford pitcher Luke Novosel has committed to Pitt; Mt. Lebanon pitcher Pete Slavonic to Southern Illinois; Plum pitcher Nick Manupelli to Youngstown State; Freeport outfielder Ryan Siegel to Coastal Carolina.

Back with the girls

Karli and Tanya Timko of Chartiers-Houston won the WPIAL Class AA boys' tennis doubles championship in the spring. But with Karli having graduated, Tanya has decided to play girls' tennis this fall, which means she can't compete against the boys in the spring.
