Shaler boys soccer upsets Seneca Valley

The Shaler boys' soccer team finished at or near the bottom of its section the past two seasons, but an upset of No. 6 Seneca Valley last night has lifted the Titans to a much higher altitude.

Senior Eric Hackworth's goal with 3:30 left in the first overtime gave Shaler a 2-1 victory against visiting Seneca Valley (5-2, 2-1) in WPIAL Class AAA, Section 2.

Winners of four straight, the Titans (5-1-1, 3-1) share the section lead with Pine-Richland (4-3, 3-1).

Class AAA boys' soccer

• Joe Rust's goal midway through the first half lifted No. 2 Upper St. Clair (5-1-1, 2-1) to a 1-0 win against host Canon-McMillan (6-1, 2-1) in Section 5.

• No. 5-ranked Peters Township (4-1-1, 3-0) got two goals from Joe Barbati in a 7-0 win against visiting Trinity (2-7, 0-3) in Section 5.

• Adam Rosensteel's goal with two minutes left in overtime helped host Kiski Area (4-3-1, 2-0-1) upset No. 10 Penn-Trafford (6-2-1, 2-1), 2-1, in Section 1.

Class AA boys' soccer

• Top-ranked Mars (7-1, 5-0) had three players -- Ryan McKenzie, Chris Karns and Yulian Lutsiv -- scoring two goals apiece in a 10-1 rout of host Highlands (4-4, 2-3) in Section 2.

Class A boys' soccer

• Dan Szekely scored three goals, including the game-winner with 10 minutes left, to help No. 1 Greensburg Central Catholic (5-1, 5-0) top Winchester Thurston (2-3-1, 2-2-1), 3-2, in Section 1.

• No. 2 Seton-LaSalle (6-2, 4-0) got a pair of goals from defender Shawn Clark in a 4-1 win against visiting Vincentian (3-5, 1-4) in Section 3.

Boys' golf

• Bo Lustig, Tyber Lustig and Kyle Naden all shot even-par 36s to pace Belle Vernon in a 186-237 win against Connellsville at Willowbrook Golf Course in Division 1, Section 2.

• West Allegheny's Garrett Browning fired a 2-under 34 at Quicksilver Golf Club to lead the Indians past Ambridge, 193-222, in Division 1, Section 5.
