TORONTO -- The Penguins lost the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2, in a shootout tonight at Air Canada Centre, a preseason game in which backup goaltender Brent Johnson left after two periods with what is believed to be a right leg injury.
Toronto got shootout goals from Nazem Kadri and Lee Stempniak, while Jordan Staal and Chris Conner were stopped by Maple Leafs goaltender Vesa Toskala in the shootout.
The Penguins dominated the first period, outshooting the Maple Leafs, 9-5, and taking a 2-0 lead.
Ryan Bayda opened the scoring on a backhander from six feet above the crease at 10:13, and speedy Chris Conner made it 2-0 when he raced in on a breakaway and beat goaltender Vesa Toskala with another backhander at 12:48.
Toronto climbed to within 2-1 at 7:33 of the second period when Viktor Stahlberg scored from the right edge of the crease as teammate Tyler Bozak bowled over Johnson.
Johnson, with his right leg bent underneath him, stayed down briefly and got medical attention. He remained in the rest of the period but was replaced by John Curry for the third period. There was no immediate word on Johnson's status.
The Maple Leafs' Christian Hanson, a Peters native and son of Dave Hanson of "Slap Shot" fame, got the second assist.
Toronto tied the game with 1:08 left in regulation on a rebound goal by Kadri..
The Penguins' next exhibition game is Thursday in Columbus.
