As world leaders and protesters descend on the Golden Triangle during this week's G-20 summit, numerous government offices, bank branches, schools, cultural attractions and more will close. Trains and buses will be re-routed, and Downtown traffic will be severely restricted.
Major closings and information about changes to public transportation and other services are listed below.
Several government offices will close from Sept. 23-25, including the federal courthouse, the PennDOT drivers' license and photo center in the State Office Building, City Council offices and the Social Security Offices Downtown and on the North Side.
The U.S. Postal Service will remove a number of mail collection boxes within the Golden Triangle and areas expected to be affected by the summit or protests. Outgoing mail can be handed to mail carriers or routed through Automated Postal Centers at select Post Office locations.
Several colleges and universities will close.
The Art Institute of Pittsburgh will close their Downtown campus on Sept. 24 and 25, and students are urged not to stay in Downtown housing.
Carlow University has canceled classes from Sept. 23-27.
Community College of Allegheny County will close all campuses, centers and offices from Sept. 23-25.
Duquesne University has canceled classes and will close university offices from Sept. 23-25.
Point Park University will close its campus, including its residence halls, from Sept. 23-26.
Robert Morris University will close its Pittsburgh Center and Bayer Center for Nonprofit Management from Sept. 23-27. The Moon campus will remain open.
Many K-12 schools will be closed.
All 66 Pittsburgh Public Schools will close on Sept. 24 and 25, with an early dismissal -- times vary -- on Sept. 23.
The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh will close 13 elementary schools and four high schools Sept. 24 and 25, with an early dismissal on Sept. 23. The four high schools are North Catholic, Central Catholic, Oakland Catholic and Bishop Canevin.
In addition, Mount Alvernia High School in Shaler will be closed Sept. 24 and 25 but does not plan to have an early dismissal Sept. 23. And Seton-LaSalle Catholic High School has canceled classes Sept. 25 but teachers should report for an in-service day.
City Charter High School will close on Sept. 24 and 25.
West Mifflin Area School District schools and offices will close Sept. 23-25.
Schools in the Steel Valley School District will close on Sept. 24 and 25, with an early dismissal on Sept. 23.
Some banks will close locations in the Golden Triangle, including PNC Bank, which will consolidate its branches, closing all of its Downtown locations except for the PNC branch at 3 PNC Plaza and the National City branch on Stanwix Street.
Several cultural destinations, including many museums, will close.
The Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, the Carnegie Science Center, the Andy Warhol Museum and the Children's Museum will all close Sept. 24 and 25.
Phipps Conservatory will close Sept. 23 and 24, and the National Aviary will close Sept. 24 and 25.
The Carnegie Library Downtown and Business Branch on Smithfield Street will close Sept. 23-25, and the Carnegie Library Main Branch on Forbes Avenue in Oakland will close Sept. 24 and 25. Additional Carnegie Library branches may close on a case-by-case basis.
The Harris Theatre Downtown will close on dates to be announced.
Travel to and from the city and within the city by train, bus, car and foot will be restricted to varying degrees.
No Amtrak travelers can arrive in or depart from Pittsburgh from Sept. 24-26. Amtrak trains will still pass through Pittsburgh, but passengers who transfer between trains must stay on the platform.
Greyhound buses will be redirected to McKeesport for the week.
Port Authority subway service Downtown will halt. The T will stop only at First Avenue. There will be numerous changes to bus routes, and travelers taking buses Downtown should expect delays. Details are available at www.portauthority.org.
The Port Authority will also close its Downtown Service Center from Sept. 23-25, but will operate a customer service phone line at 412-442-2000 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
There will be severe restrictions on vehicular traffic Downtown, which will be redirected through three designated entry points from midnight Sept. 23 through Sept. 25. Pedestrians entering the Secret Service perimeter around the David H. Lawrence Convention Center will have to pass through an access point with a magnetometer. The Allegheny YMCA at 600 W. North Ave. will close from noon Sept. 23 through 6 a.m. Sept. 26. Members may use other YMCA locations during the closure.
The Central Blood Bank Downtown Donor Center in the Law and Finance Building will close Sept. 23-25.
