WPIAL Class AAAA: Bethel Park overcomes North Hills

Bethel Park enjoyed coming from behind to defeat North Hills in last year's game so much, the Black Hawks decided to do it again last night.

Bre Ford ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns, erasing a three-point deficit and giving Bethel Park its 16th straight win against WPIAL competition by downing host North Hills, 21-10.

After winning on the last play of the game last year, the defending WPIAL champion Black Hawks (3-0) scored the final two touchdowns of last night's contest on runs of 5 and 24 yards by Ford, handing the Indians (1-2) their second loss in the process.

Ford finished with 145 yards on 25 carries, also scoring on a 4-yard run just before halftime.

The Black Hawks outgained the Indians, 287-185, also getting a fine showing from quarterback Matthew Bliss, who completed 8 of 11 passes for 138 yards.

North Hills' Max Creighan scored on a 65-yard run two minutes into the second quarter to put the Indians on the board first, but Ford's first touchdown tied the score. Anthony Chiapetta kicked a 19-yard field goal for North Hills midway through the third quarter to give the Indians a 10-7 advantage.

Creighan rushed for 83 yards on eight carries, and the Indians ran for 109 yards overall. Quarterback Taylor Schmitt finished 10 of 21 for 76 yards, completing six of those passes to Creighan.

OTHER GAMES
McKeesport 55, Connellsville 0

The third-ranked Tigers (2-1, 1-0) destroyed their second opponent in a row, blowing past winless Connellsville (0-3, 0-1) in the Foothills Conference opener for both teams. The Tigers had routed Plum last week, 54-0. The loss for Connellsville was its 20th in a row.

Penn-Trafford 34, Hempfield 18

Tyler Zimmer's 156 rushing yards and three touchdowns vaulted the Warriors (1-2, 1-0) to the Foothills Conference win against host Hempfield (1-2, 0-1). Zimmer tallied a 4-yard scoring run in the second quarter, and scored on runs of 29 and 45 yards in the fourth quarter. The Warriors also got an 83-yard kickoff return for a score from Ryan Austin. Dante Nania accounted for both of Hempfield's scores, one rushing and one passing.

Erie McDowell 49, Norwin 6

Also in the Foothills Conference, visiting Erie McDowell (3-0, 1-0) stayed on the winning side by defeating previously unbeaten Norwin (2-1, 0-1). McDowell's Zach Greenawalt ran for 178 yards on 11 carries, rushing for 37- and 2-yard touchdowns, and also hooking up with Mike Bizzarro for a 57-yard touchdown. In total, McDowell ran for 470 yards on 49 carries.

Woodland Hills 37, Canon-McMillan 7

After getting shut out by the Big Macs last year, the Wolverines (2-1) surprisingly dominated on both sides of the ball. Lafayette Pitts returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and the Wolverines rolled from there, outgaining the visiting Big Macs (1-2), 368-74. Dom Timbers ran for 147 yards and scored on runs of 12 and 71 yards, and John Yezovich completed all nine of his pass attempts for 140 yards and a touchdown.

Pine-Richland 45, Highlands 7

Justin Williams rushed for 204 yards and three touchdowns to push the host Rams (2-1) to victory against winless Highlands (0-3). Williams, who logged 16 carries, scored on runs of 6 and 61 yards. He also hauled in a 9-yard touchdown pass from Eric Kordenbrock, who added two others, both to Tommy Berexa. Gary Negley ran for 118 yards and a touchdown for Highlands. The Rams outgained Highlands on the ground, 263-135.

Peters Township 20, Knoch 17

Andrew Erenberg scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter to give the host Indians (3-0) the comeback win. After Knoch's Tim McNerney scored from two yards out to put the Knights (0-3) ahead earlier in the quarter, 17-13, Erenberg added on to a statline that concluded with 132 yards, his third 100-yard effort in a row. McNerney finished with 169 yards for the Knights.

Shaler 28, Hampton 7

Hampton coach Jacque DeMatteo returned to the school he previously coached, but his current team was cut down by the host Titans (3-0). The Talbots (1-2) scored on a first-quarter interception return by Bill Young, but it was all Shaler after that. Jesse DellaValle scored on a pair of short touchdown runs to give him seven on the season, and Tyler Bills was 7 of 12 for 118 yards and a touchdown. The Titans also got 101 yards on nine carries from Israel Moreno.

Seneca Valley 22, Baldwin 7

Luke Mueller scored on a 46-yard fumble return to open the scoring, and the Raiders (1-2) held on to defeat the visiting Highlanders (0-3). Also for the Raiders, Troy Witt ran for a 9-yard touchdown and Donny Holl rushed for a 1-yard score. Garrett Wild tallied Baldwin's lone score, running it in from 12 yards out.

Penn Hills 31, Butler 21

The Indians (1-2) earned their first win by knocking off visiting Butler (0-3). The Indians began the season with losses to Gateway and Bethel Park.

Kiski Area 35, Indiana 7

In a battle of winless teams, Kiski Area (1-2) earned the win at Indiana (0-3).
