Lake Erie: Steelhead anglers were crowding the lakefront at Trout and Godfrey runs when the lake was calm and around the wall at Walnut Creek, but Poor Richard's Bait and Tackle advised yesterday it will take significant rain and cooler temperatures to trigger any real steelheading. Good perch fishing continued in 60 to 65 feet. Some anglers were targeting perch in 70 feet, but fish seemed to be moving in closer yesterday. Walleyes were hitting in 70 to 75 feet.

Allegheny River/Allegheny Reservoir (Warren County): A few walleyes and smallmouth bass, northern pike and perch were reported in the river and reservoir. Shane Hennessey of Warren released a 35-inch pike in Conewango Creek.

Allegheny River (Venango County): Darren Potts of East Hickory and Dan Manross of Tidioute beat 43 other teams to win the Sept. 13 Allegheny River Bass tournament with five smallmouths totaling close to 14 pounds. Jay McCandless of Oil City and John Dunham of Pleasantville boated the lunker, a 4-plus pound smallmouth. An angler Wednesday night reported a slow bass bite in low flow.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Better than average fishing was reported, with Rich Diebold of Pittsburgh catching 10 largemouth bass, including four more than 16 inches. Anglers were catching crappies and bluegills drifting minnows in about 10 feet; shore fishermen were doing well on panfish under the causeway.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): Numbers of white bass and some crappies were reported, along with catfish and hybrid striped bass, including many small ones, all over the lake.

Oil Creek (Venango County): Low, clear conditions prevailed in recent days, with anglers catching trout on Blue-winged Olives and midges in the early mornings and evenings and Triple Threat Caddis and nymphs during day. Slow and steady angling pressure and good numbers of holdover trout also were reported on this and nearby streams, such as Pithole, Pine, Little Sandy and Sugar creeks.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Numbers of crappies, including some slabs, were reported amid low angling pressure in recent days. Anglers also were plugging the weedlines for bass. Some nice walleyes, 22 to 26 inches and a few smaller ones, also were reported. Anglers were trolling for muskies; the biggest reported release was 41 inches.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Tim Costello of Penn Hills released a 53-inch muskie at 9:10 a.m. Sept. 9. Another angler reported catching muskies about 40 inches around weedy areas in recent days. A few anglers were catching hybrid striped bass and walleyes in the evenings.

Allegheny River: Better than average walleye catches were reported in good conditions this week, with some fish running in the mid-20-inch range. Decent catfishing for both flatheads and channels was reported. The sauger and smallmouth bass bites were average.

Ohio River: Phillip Coffin caught seven smallmouth bass including a 5-pound 5-ouncer, on a green buzzbait. George Hinzman of Neville Island released a 36-inch tiger muskie Sept. 6. A few catfish were reported. Daniel Mead released a 30-pound, 42-inch catfish with 23-inch girth.

Youghiogheny River: Good trout fishing is reported on bait, lures and flies.

Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): Out of 26 two-person teams, just four walleyes were weighed at a local tournament last Saturday. The winning walleye weighed about 3 1/3 pounds and was tournament lunker. A few perch and bluegills and a catfish also were boated. Four friends caught seven smallmouth bass up to 18 inches.

High Point Lake (Somerset County): Releases of northern pike were reported in recent days.

Spring Creek (Centre County): Average seasonal flow was reported yesterday. Hatches included tan and green caddis, midges, tricos, summer blue quills, and a few cahills. Cooler nights have spinners coming down in late morning. A little topwater action also was reported.
