Work resumes on Hilton banner
Friday, September 18, 2009

The Hilton Pittsburgh moved quickly yesterday to pay a contractor who had suspended work on a giant G-20 welcome banner designed to cover an unfinished addition at the hotel.

Airborne Promotions on Saw Mill Run Boulevard had walked off the job Sept. 9 after the Hilton owner, Shubh Hotels LLC, failed to deliver on a promise to pay it.

But Hilton General Manager Jonathan Shisler said yesterday that the hotel had taken care of the payment issue and that work would resume this weekend. He said the banner would be up in time for the summit Thursday and next Friday.

"Any issues we've had with Jay [Simpson, Airborne's owner] are resolved, and the banner's going up Sunday," he said.

Mr. Shisler would not discuss any of the financial details relating to the resumption of the work.

The banner, which will state "Pittsburgh Welcomes the World," is designed to cover up the structural steel for an unfinished addition at the hotel's entrance. The work was left undone when another contractor, P.J. Dick, walked off the job in May after not being paid $317,273.

Mr. Simpson said yesterday that he was happy to get the debt over the banner resolved and to get back to work.

"This puts on a better face for Pittsburgh. I'm all for it," he said. "What the mayor's office and the G-20 committee envisioned, we're going to get it done."

He declined further comment.

Mr. Shisler said the bulk of the work on the banner, which measures nearly 6,000 square feet, will be done Sunday and the rest on Monday. The banner originally was to be installed between Sept. 1 and Sept. 6.

The idea for the banner was conceived in an effort to hide the addition's steel framing, which many consider to be unsightly, from the G-20 dignitaries and visitors entering Downtown from the Fort Pitt Bridge with the Hilton in full view.

Airborne Promotions did hang a black mesh covering over the addition for Shubh at the request of the National Football League, which wanted the structural steel covered for festivities at Point State Park related to the start of the NFL season Sept. 10.

The flap over the banner is the latest in a series of financial woes for the struggling hotel.

Earlier this month, a union health and welfare fund set up for Hilton workers garnished Shubh's PNC bank accounts and a Wells Fargo Advisors account held by Shubh CEO Atul Bisaria in an effort to collect a $1 million debt.

The city revoked the building permit for the addition after the project's architect requested the return of his design plans and drawings after Shubh failed to pay him more than $308,575 for his work. P.J. Dick said it was owed $317,273 for its role.
