Damion Jones-Moore

Central Catholic

This past week: Jones-Moore carried the ball 28 times for 258 yards -- 123 in the final quarter -- to lead Central Catholic, the Post-Gazette's top-ranked team in Class AAAA, to a 21-7 victory on the road against Canon-McMillan. Jones-Moore had two touchdown runs in the Vikings' victory.

Check this out: The 5-foot-6, 165-pound sophomore has rushed for more than 200 yards in both of the Vikings' games this season -- both wins. The back has found the end zone six times this season and leads the WPIAL in rushing with 462 yards on 52 carries. He rushed for more than 500 yards last season as a freshman.

• Who is your favorite athlete? Barry Sanders. He was a real good player, and he was a real good person off the field. I look up to him.

• How does your size affect the way you play? I really just play. I don't look at my size, I just look at how I can beat the other team. It's kind of an advantage being behind the big linemen.

• Who is your biggest role model? I'd have to say Kyle Wilson (former Vikings running back who passed away in 2008). He was just a great person -- a great football player and a good friend. If I needed anybody for anything, I would go to him.

• Favorite sport to watch on TV? Football, of course. I just love football. It's in my blood.

• Least favorite sport to watch? Golf. It's pretty boring.

• Who's your pick to win the Super Bowl? The Pittsburgh Steelers, of course. I'm a Pittsburgh fan to the fullest. I love everything Pittsburgh.

• Where will you be in 15 years? Hopefully in the NFL setting records and being a person somebody looks up to.

• Most people would be surprised to know that ... I take chorus.

Elaina Balouris

Hampton

This past week: Balouris placed first in the Red, White & Blue Classic cross country invitational at the Schenley Park Oval. The event is one of the largest of the season and includes many of the WPIAL's top runners.

Check this out: Balouris, a senior, is one of the favorites to win the WPIAL Class AAA individual championship. Last year, she finished third in both the WPIAL and PIAA championships. Also a track standout, Balouris placed third in the 3,200 meters at last year's WPIAL championships.

• Are you comfortable with having a target on your back this year? It definitely puts some pressure on me, but I'm not that worried about it. Anyone can win this year.

• What do you enjoy more, cross country or track? Cross country. I just like running up and down hills, and I like the scenery. It's more exciting, I think.

• How many pairs of cross country shoes do you own? Well, I have about six pairs throughout my house. I go through about four a year.

• Your dad's an ophthalmologist. Have you thought about following in his footsteps? I have, but I don't think that's what I want to do. I kind of want to be an elementary school teacher.

• Your favorite Steelers player? Troy Polamalu. He's Greek Orthodox and so am I.

• Finish this sentence. Kanye West is ... Too outspoken.
