About 40 people attended a pet memorial service Sunday at Melrose Cemetery in South Fayette. This was the fifth year for the service held by Deb Chebatoris, of Chartiers Custom Pet Cremation.
The service is always held on the second Sunday in September, designated as Pet Memorial Sunday by the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories. Pet owners brought pictures of their departed pets and read tributes to them.
Speakers included veterinarian Brad Carmichael, bereavement specialist Allison Holst and trainer/behaviorist Barbara Golden. At the end of the service, a flock of white doves was released "to symbolize our ability to let go of our precious companions," Ms. Chebatoris said.
