Pitt senior guard Jermaine Dixon will miss a minimum of eight weeks after having successful surgery on his right foot today.
Dixon had the surgery after reinjuring the foot last night in a pickup game with other Pitt players. Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said another player landed on Dixon's foot as he was jumping.
Dixon had bone graft surgery to correct a fifth metatarsal fracture at UPMC South Side Hospital. It was a similar surgery to the one former Pitt point guard Levance Fields had when he fractured the fifth metatarsal in his foot two seasons ago.
Fields returned to the lineup after only seven weeks. The earliest Dixon could return is the middle of November, which means he could miss the Nov. 13 season opener against Wofford.
"Cautious would be an understatement in what we've done in the past and now with this injury," Jamie Dixon said. "A guy landed on his foot. It's just one of those things. This injury is a little more common with basketball players and it is similar to Levance's. But the difference is that we know how this one happened. It was a trauma to the foot, some major force came down on the foot."
Jamie Dixon has accumulated some depth at guard. He has returning players Brad Wanamaker, Ashton Gibbs and Travon Woodall as well as transfer Chase Adams, who came to Pitt in August after spending the past three seasons at Centenary College
