The Pitt football team has landed a top quarterback from Eastern Pennsylvania.
Anthony Gonzalez of Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pa., has made a verbal commitment to Pitt. Gonzalez, a senior, was the Associated Press Pennsylvania Class AAAA player of the year in 2008 after leading his team to a state championship. Liberty beat WPIAL champion Bethel Park in the title game.
Gonzalez (6 feet 2, 193 pounds) also had scholarship offers from Penn State, Florida State and Maryland, among others. As a junior, he had 1,697 rushing yards and 1,570 passing yards. Super Prep magazine ranks him the No. 13 quarterback in the country.
