Brighter, longer-lasting lights that use 80 to 90 percent less electricity soon will be installed in traffic signals on Collier Avenue and First Street in Heidelberg.
Borough Council last night awarded an $8,862 contract for the traffic light project to Traffic Systems and Services. The project is expected to be completed by the end of October.
A Department of Community and Economic state grant of $7,000 will pay for the bulk of the project. The rest of the money -- $1,862 -- will come from the borough's liquid fuels fund.
In addition to replacing 66 incandescent bulbs with light-emitting diode fixtures, the project calls for realigning the traffic signals with travel lanes, replacing a missing guide wire at Collier Avenue and installing new direction and pedestrian signs at intersections with Route 50.
