Q&A about restrictions Downtown for the G-20
Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Q: Can I drive into Downtown?
A: The Downtown business district will be closed to most vehicular traffic during the G-20 summit. There will be exceptions for Downtown residents, business deliveries, hotel visitors and taxis.

Q: Can I park my car in the Golden Triangle?
A: Parking will not be available in the Golden Triangle. But the city has identified several parking lots along the periphery of Downtown as possible parking alternatives. These lots contain nearly 20,000 spaces and are located in the lower Hill District, Uptown, Station Square, the Strip District and the North Shore. A number of small service lots and garages exist near these larger ones.

Q: Can I take the bus into Downtown?
A: Buses will have Downtown access but will be detoured around the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. The runs will start on their regular schedule, but the Port Authority cautioned that delays, some of them lengthy, should be expected. The Port Authority said reconfigured routes are available to view on its Web site.

Q: Can I take the T into Downtown?
A: The T light-rail service will be available as far as the First Avenue station, but the three subway stations will be closed.

Q: Can I take a taxi into Downtown?
A: Yes. Taxis, hotel shuttles, ACCESS vans and mail trucks will be accommodated.

Q: Will pedestrians be able to park in the Strip District and walk through the Golden Triangle?
A: No. Inside the Secret Service Perimeter, pedestrians and cyclists will not be able to cross 10th Street or 11th Street, so there will be no pedestrian or cyclist access from the Strip District to Downtown.

Q: Can I make a business delivery Downtown?
A: Permitted vehicles such as business delivery trucks will have to access Downtown via one of three entrances: the Smithfield Street Bridge, Fifth Avenue at Ross Street and the Roberto Clemente Bridge.

Q: If I live Downtown, can I drive home?
A: Downtown residents who present their Downtown address on driver's licenses will be allowed in.

Q: When do the traffic restrictions start and end?
A: The restrictions will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, and will end as soon as possible on the evening of Friday, Sept. 25.

Q: Can I drive on the Parkway?
A: Yes, but the Downtown ramps will be closed.

Q: Will the bike trails be open?
A: Yes.

Q: Where can I find more information?
A: Learn more at the Port Authority's Web site: www.portauthority.org or the city's G-20 safety Web site, www.g20safety.org.

Correction/Clarification: (Published Sept. 17, 2009) Pedestrians will be able to enter Downtown as they normally would during the G-20 summit, although vehicular traffic will be restricted to three designated points. This story as originally published on Sept. 16, 2009 about the impact of the traffic restrictions on businesses incorrectly summarized the traffic plans.
