Lake Erie: Excellent walleye fishing is reported on the first trench in 68-72 feet. Scott and Debbie Gates of Farmington caught eight walleyes averaging 4 pounds in 72 feet north of Walnut trolling Reef Runners and worm harnesses in an eastward direction last week. Sunday, Gates and a friend boated 12 walleyes in the same spot, trolling north and west. Perch fishing remains very good in 68-72 feet.
Allegheny River/Allegheny Reservoir (Warren County): A few keeper-size walleyes, perch running 10 to 12 1/2 inches, northern pike and smallmouth bass were hitting in the river and reservoir. The river also was yielding releases of rainbow trout.
Allegheny River (Venango County): High, cooler than normal water kept fish scattered late last week, although numbers of small smallmouths were released on flukes and rubber worms in shallow water.
Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Anglers were catching a few walleyes jigging blade baits and Sonars in deeper water. A couple of 20-inch fish and a 27-incher were reported. Nice crappies were hitting around brush piles. Dale Preston of Greenville released a 34-inch muskie while trolling.
Woodcock Creek Lake (Crawford County): A decent smallmouth bass bite was reported in recent weeks.
Tamarack Lake (Crawford County): This popular muskie impoundment has yielded a few catches in recent weeks, but the bite was slow overall.
Shenango Lake/Shenango River (Mercer County): Cooler weather was expected to spur the hybrid striped bass bite, with catches now coming in schools of shad along the shoreline. White bass also were reported. The river below the dam was yielding large numbers of crappies.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): Some hybrid striper activity was reported with fish up to 26 inches hitting on crawlers and shiners. Bass and a few crappies and walleyes also were reported, along with numbers of channel catfish up to 2 feet long. Emma Walsh, 9, of the Butler area caught a 22-inch channel cat Aug. 30. Tim Costello of Penn Hills released a 50 1/2-inch muskie in recent weeks. His daughter and wife released a 48-incher and a 46-incher.
Allegheny River: Anglers were catching smallmouth bass, freshwater drum and a few crappies around Harmarville in recent days. The Venture Outdoors Downtown TriAnglers reported a slow bite off the North Shore Wednesday, with just eight fish caught. Marty Sanders of Overbrook caught a 12 1/2-inch smallmouth bass.
Ohio River: Stephen Manukas caught a 31-inch, 10-pound 8-ounce walleye on a live bluegill nightfishing near Monaca last weekend. He also reported boating two 21-pound flathead catfish. Laura Stewart of East Liverpool, Ohio, won the summer's final Chester Newell Sportsmen's Club Catfish Tournament Sept. 5 with a 40 1/2-inch whopper.
High Point Lake (Somerset County): Water is about a foot below normal pool level and yielding northern pike, crappies, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and bullhead catfish.
Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): John Spittal of Ursina and friends reported catching 12 smallmouth bass up to 19 inches in shallow water, some nice perch about 12 inches, and a couple of bullhead catfish, Monday.
Mahoning Creek Lake (Armstrong County): A 30-plus inch northern pike was reported.
Yellow Creek Lake (Indiana County): A 30-inch walleye was boated by an angler trolling the main channel in recent weeks.
Loyalhanna Lake (Westmoreland County): A 3-pound 2-ounce largemouth bass was reported in recent days.
Donegal Lake (Westmoreland County): Weedless rigs and topwater lures were nabbing bass in recent days. The state Fish and Boat Commission is expected to begin drawing down the water for weed control purposes today.
Glendale Lake, Wilmore Dam (Cambria County): Nice size crappies and decent-size bass were reported at Glendale, while Wilmore was yielding bigger bass.
Raystown Lake (Huntingdon County): Sparky Price and Karen Newingham of Huntingdon won the recent Pennsylvania Striped Bass Association tournament, with a two-fish total weight of 37-plus pounds. Price, of Trophy Guide Service, released a near 50-pound striper Sept. 1, and said a few 40-plus pounders were caught in recent weeks. The bite is transitioning from nighttime to daytime, with fish hitting in 18-22 feet on trolling lures or suspended live bait, such as shad and alewife. Largemouth bass were staying close to weeds in recent weeks. Smallmouths were hitting in shallow water mornings and evenings and in 12-18 feet during the day. Numbers of lake trout were hitting, with smaller ones coming in 32-40 feet, and 15-20 pounders hitting in 45-55 feet.
Lake Chautauqua (New York): Sharon Luchovick-Dworakowski and her husband Matt Dworakowski of McKees Rocks released two muskies, 43 and 39 inches, on Legend perch baits, July 29. The previous week Dworakowski released seven muskies 34-43 inches.
