Colin Dunlap's WVU football chat
Thursday, September 10, 2009

Colin Dunlap: Alrighty folks, I'm here and ready to go sitting in my Hampton Twp. home office....with that said, fire away.

WVU_4_Life: Hey Colin, as a recent graduate from WVU this past December, this is my first WVU football season back in Pittsburgh. I was wondering if there are any good "Mountaineer" bars or establishments to watch games at?

Colin Dunlap: I was contacted by the Alumni Chapter president in Pittsburgh about my blog, his name is Bryan Bond ... if you Google him and "Pittsburgh Chapter of West Virginia Alumni" his email address is easy to find...and he will be more than happy to help.

Keyser_Couchburner: Any truth to rumors that Geno Smith is pressing JB in practice? I love JB and he deserves his chance to lead this team, but I am worried about him staying on the field all season, especially if he continues to run the ball like he did against Liberty. We are likely to need Smith at some point...I was very disapponted that he did not see any PT Saturday.

Colin Dunlap: I don't think "pressing him" is the right word. Brown is the starter. He should be the starter. He is better, at this point and it is my feeling he will be all season. Is Geno Smith very good, yes. His time will come, though. Also, about Brown running the ball, remember this: The TD he scored against Liberty was a check-down, where he audibled (is that a word?) at the line after seeing the coverage, called his own number and scored. Pretty impressive.

Eersman: What is the story with Glover?

Colin Dunlap: He needs to work harder in practice. End of story.

gotya: After the Liberty game, I am not convinced the Mountaineers can win the conference. Are you?

Colin Dunlap: Mountaineers radio man Tony Caridi wrote a great piece on the official WVU athletics page about this in which he cited a conversation w/ Beano Cook ... it said, in short: how can you REALLY judge a team after just one game. I agree with that.

Homey: What are your thoughts on seeing Rutgers get beat down at home? Do you think this makes Cincy the favorite to repeat in the Big East?

Colin Dunlap: Did Schiano know Rutgers had a game? That was my first thought. All kidding aside, I thought Pike and Gilyard were very good, very, very good. Again, a little early to tell. I will say this, the part of the Bearcats' offense I really liked was when they put that converted TE in there to run the Wildcat around the goalline...the kid looked like Tebow running the football. It added a wrinkle that was a huge plus to coach Kelly's offense.

Mountainlair: A score prediction for Saturday's ECU game?

Colin Dunlap: WVU 28, ECU 20

Minor_Harris: Great insight on your blog and also great stuff from Rasheed Marshall. How did you get him involved?

Colin Dunlap: Just simply called him. I had heard that Rasheed was a great guy and, after talking to him and meeting him, what I heard was 100 percent accurate. Great guy. Also, as per his interaction with the blog, I think he brings an insight into things that very few people in the world can...I mean, it is a rather short list of humans who have ever been D1 quarterbacks. I am happy Rasheed is doing something weekly for the blog.

gotya: Colin, how long do we have to watch this awful kickoff coverage unit?

Colin Dunlap: Well, you kind of have to kick it after a score, so I guess you are going to have to watch it every time WVU puts any points on the board. In terms of it they will improve, that is a huge question at this point. I think what needs to be figured out is that if the shortcomings have been tactical (in terms of what they are doing) or personnel-wise (in terms of who is out there on the unit). Stewart changed three guys on the unit DURING the liberty game, so I tend to lean more toward the personnel not getting the job done. This week's game will provide a much better barometer as to where the unit is.

Mountainlair: Good story on Reed Williams this morning. Do you think his shoulders are really going to hold up?

Colin Dunlap: I do. Granted, having two surgeries is never easy to come back from. Heck, having one surgery is never easy to come back from. But, he was instructed to rest, and rest he did. From the looks of him against Liberty, it sure looked to me as if he was 100 percent. Now, a truer test would be longevity, and how he holds up a few consecutive weeks when there are games.

motownthrowdown: Colin, did the defensive line play surprise you against Liberty?

Colin Dunlap: not the unit as a whole, but I think the play of Julian Miller surprised just about everyone. Miller's speed rush, and the way he got to the Liberty QB, seemed to be the talk of the postgame media room and the crux of many follow-up stories this week heading into the ECU game. On his teleconference, ECU coach Skip Holtz touched on Miller, saying something along the lines of, "and then Miller kind of jumped out at us on tape...." So, I thought that 3-man front would play well against Liberty, but I didn't think Julian Miller would have the type of game he had. Good for him.

pgheer: Colin, what was your take on the O-Line play in week 1?

Colin Dunlap: It was steady, I guess that is the best way to put it. It was a challenge in that they were playing against that odd man front, as Liberty ran that 3-4 and had a kind at the NT position who weighed about 65954 pounds. All in all, I thought they played well...in particular, I thought Seneca Valley product Don Barclay played very well. One of the coaches told me he graded out tremendously high and didn't really miss any assignments. This is a unit that needs to continue to improve, though.

motownthrowdown: Your thoughts about JB's opener?

Colin Dunlap: JB's opener? Did he play "I Feel Good" to start the show? Did he come out with 'Please, Please, Please' at the beginning? Oh, not James Brown? Oh, you mean WVU QB Jarrett Brown....I thought it was about as good as you could ask for. Very solid debut.

pgheer: Colin, any word on changes to personnel on the kickoff team? I was happily surprised with the Field Goal kicking out of the gate.

Colin Dunlap: I know that Ryan Clarke was working some with the kick coverage unit, and from there I would maybe look for some bigger bodies on that unit....maybe some FB/LB/S types as opposed to WR/RB/CB types. As per the FG guy, Bitancurt -- I cannot even begin to imagine the pressure that guy felt in his first college game. He was perfect...can't ask for anything better and they weren't all chip shots either.

Colin Dunlap: OK...time for about one more.

Eersman: Will Geno Smith play in a game this year?

Colin Dunlap: He will, but the time has to be right....they aren't going to throw him to the wolves. It is a process with a young QB and they need to bring him along. That said, Jarrett Brown looked pretty darn good to me on Saturday and Smith this year, barring injury, will be a backup. Alright, good stuff today.. I have to go cut my grass (no kidding) and then crank out a feature for Saturday's paper. As always, thanks and keep clicking on the blog, 'Eers the Ground.
