Ron Musselman's Penn State football chat
Thursday, September 10, 2009

Ron Musselman: Good afternoon. This is Ron Musselman coming at you from the foot of the Nittany Mountains in University Park, Pa.

Bring_Back_PittPSU: With PSU's weak schedule again this year, does Paterno's final career win total deserve an asterisk? Presuming this dreadful non-conference scheduling continues, at a minimum Bobby Bowden should be allowed to count his JC wins. That's arguably the talent equivalent of PSU's non-conference opponents in recent years. Thoughts?

Ron Musselman: I think you are being a little harsh and haven't looked around too much. Just about every school out there is playing a cupcake non-conference schedule. The USC-Ohio State game Saturday is a rarity. That being said, Penn State's weak non-conference schedule definitely could hurt it in its quest for reaching the national championship game. The good news is the Lions play at Alabama in the second game next year.

Bring_Back_PittPSU: PSU is starting to remind midwesterners of the old 70s & 80s Nebraska teams that played in the 'Big 2/Little 6.' They too played n-o-b-o-d-y but Oklahoma (the equivalent to PSU's game with the Buckeyes), then wondered why they lacked national respect. With that background, does PSU have any decent non-Big 10 (errr, 11) teams on near-future schedules?

Ron Musselman: As I mentioned in the previous question, Penn State is at Alabama next year and then has the Crimson Tide at home in 2011. The Lions play at Virginia in 2012 and at home in '13. And they have a home-and-home series with Rutgers in 2014 and '15.

AustenWithAnE: Do you believe the Terrelle Pryor hype? He seems to be on everyone's Heisman list, but I haven't seen anything to make me believe he's the best QB in the Big Ten.

Ron Musselman: Pryor is an incredible talent who Penn State fans love to knock since he didn't come here. Is he the best quarterback in the Big Ten? That's debatable. Daryll Clark was the first-team All-Big Ten quarterback last year and he threw for 353 yards against Akron team in the opener. Clark might be a step ahead of Pryor at this point, but Pryor has a chance to make a statement against USC Saturday night on national TV.

ConorMcG: Big fan of the chat Ron, what's your first impression of the wideouts? Better than advertised?

Ron Musselman: Glad you like the chats. I think you're going to like this new set of receivers. Graham Zug, Derek Moye and Chaz Powell all looked like seasoned veterans and freshman Devon Smith figures to get into the act even more in coming weeks. In the preseason, Sean Lee picked Moye as his surprise player of the year. Moye needs to do it on a consistent basis, but 6 catches and 138 yards in his first start was pretty impressive -- no matter who the opponent is.

ConorMcG: Tough to say after one game, but do you think Sean Lee has a chance at the Bednarik?

Ron Musselman: I thought Sean Lee turned in a nice effort for his first game back in more than 20 months. Akron ran away from Lee several times, but he still finished with seven tackles -- two for losses -- which was the second-best total on the team. I think in another or two, Lee will trust his knee again and will return to the form that landed him the defensive MVP honors in the 2007 Alamo Bowl.
