In memory of Sept. 11

We don't forget. To mark the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on America, several towns in the South Hills have planned services. Here's a look:

Bethel Park/Upper St. Clair

Brookside Farms Neighborhood plans a Military Connections Fallen Heroes Open House to honor military service members who have lost their lives. A night of tributes, entertainment and shopping will begin at 7 p.m. tomorrow at 3211 Araphoe Road.

Glassport

The American Legion will hold a candlelight vigil memorial at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Memorial Park, followed by a dinner at the American Legion Hall at 411 Monongahela Ave.

Mt. Lebanon

A flag-raising ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow at Markham Elementary School, followed at 10 a.m. by a memorial ceremony held by the Fire Department and Medical Rescue Team South at the Public Safety building, 555 Washington Road.

Here we go, Matty, here we go!

Matthew "Matty" Geracitano, 73, a McKeesport nursing home resident who has special needs, will have his lifelong wish to attend a Steelers game granted tonight, thanks to the Twilight Wish Foundation and Direct Energy Business, of Pittsburgh.

Despite his handicap, Mr. Geracitano volunteered for years at Glassport Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 and received a special recognition award from Citizens Hose Company No. 1 in 1991.

He always wanted to go to a Steelers game but could not afford tickets. Now, he and an aide, Sister Thomas Joseph Gaines, will see tonight's opener at Heinz Field against the Tennessee Titans.

In addition, the Steelers gave Mr. Geracitano a football autographed by the entire 2008 Super Bowl-winning team.

The foundation is a national nonprofit that grants wishes to economically disadvantaged seniors over age 68. If you are interested in being involved, contact Cheryl Nemanic at 724-712-5655. For more, visit www.twilightwish.org.
